Defending champion San Beda almost there for 2nd NCAA jrs basketball Final Four slot

Game Thursday

(San Andres Sports Complex)

2:30 p.m. – San Beda vs LSGH

MANILA — Defending champion San Beda is almost there, a win shy of securing the second-best possible ranking in the Final Four of the National Collegiate Athletic Association juniors basketball Final Four following a convincing 86-75 victory over Mapua on Monday at the San Andres Sports Complex.

The Red Cubs rode high on Chris Hubilla heroics as he 22 big points on top of nine rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Crucial for the Red Cubs was a telling double-digit run in the second half that allowed them to pull away from a tight see-saw game from the Red Robins.

Their next assignment is just as crucial as ever as it is a must for San Beda to hurdle College of St. Benilde-La Salle Green Hills for a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four. The must-win game for SBC is on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. over at the same venue.

Otherwise, the Red Cubs will slide down as the third-ranked squad.

Mapua has already settled for the No. 4 ranking and will take on elimination round topnotcher Letran, which posseses a twice-to-beat semis incentive, on Monday.

Andrei Dungo also had 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks while John Lopez added 11 points for the Red Cubs.

        The scores:

        San Beda (86) – Hubilla 22, Dungo 16, Lopez 11, Mundas 9, Reyes 8, Lorenzo 8, Ludovice 5, Lecciones 4, Ronquillo 3, Wagan 0.
