Redeem Globe Rewards via GlobeOne app

Globe has called on the public to be extra vigilant and never engage with text messages with links directing customers to click to redeem Globe Rewards, as these are scam SMS sent out by fraudsters via spoofing.

Customers have reported receiving spoofed messages impersonating Globe’s sender ID, inviting them to click dubious links supposedly to claim their Globe Rewards. These malicious links are meant to steal personal information, including credit card details.

Fraudsters are apparently taking advantage of Globe’s push for customers to claim their Rewards before the expiry on March 31, 2024.

All official SMS from Globe do not contain links.

“We call on our customers to please never click on links in SMS pretending to be from Globe. Any text message containing a link from supposed sender ID “Globe” is a fraudulent message done via spoofing. Globe will never send an official advisory with links. Do not fall for enticing offers in these scam messages,” said Darius Delgado, Globe Vice President and Head of Consumer Mobile Business.

He reminded customers that Globe Rewards may only be claimed via one platform: the GlobeOne app.

“Globe Rewards points may only be redeemed via the GlobeOne app. We’d like to encourage our customers to use this official platform, as this is the only place where they can claim rewards,” he said.

Spoofed messages are malicious SMS sent out via illegal equipment called the international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) catcher or a fake cell tower or base station, which captures mobile users within a limited radius.

Brought around or foot or inside a vehicle, the IMSI catcher forces phones within a certain area to downgrade to 2G, the old cellular network technology for voice calls and texts. Fraudsters can then send out SMS from any spoofed or impersonated number or sender ID, such as “Globe,” to mobile phones connected to this fake cell tower.

These messages do not pass through the Globe network and go under the radar, evading its spam filters.

Globe observed a rise in spoofing and other forms of text scams, such as messages sent via over-the-top services or chat apps that are also outside the purview of telcos, after it bolstered security measures that filtered out spam and scam SMS.

In September 2022, Globe became the first Philippine telco to take the unprecedented step of barring all person-to-person messages with links from its network. It also implemented stronger policies on which sources or sender IDs are allowed to send app-to-person messages with links.

With its aggressive filters enforced 24/7, Globe blocked a total of 5.48 billion spam and scam messages in 2023, twice the volume it barred in 2022.

These measures altogether made SMS scamming more difficult for fraudsters, prompting them to find novel ways to do their illicit trade.

“As we continue to enhance our security measures to protect our customers and our network, scammers will keep finding new ways to defraud mobile users, which are often outside Globe’s control. We need the help of our customers to be proactive in protecting themselves as Globe does not have control over a lot of content that reach them, such as texts from spoofed SMS and from chat apps, and unconfirmed information they get on social media. Please be discerning,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Globe calls on its customers to report suspicious SMS via its Stop Spam portal.

The Philippine creative, entertainment, and digital industries have joined hands to push for the Senate’s swift passage of amendments to the Intellectual Property Code to enable online site blocking as a measure to combat content piracy, safeguard intellectual property rights, and foster the growth of Filipino talent and creativity.

Lending their voices and support to the cause are actors Ryan Eigenmann, Cai Cortez, and Kiray Celis; host and presenter Pia Guanio-Mago; and writer-director Fifth Solomon. Together, they amplify the call for shared responsibility in combating online piracy to ensure that Filipino talents are duly recognized, protected, and rewarded.

Their support follows recent calls from multi-awarded actor John Arcilla and leading actress Shaina Magdayao for the Senate to pass amendments enabling online site blocking and commit to stopping piracy.

Online piracy inflicts extensive harm on the ecosystem of the creative and entertainment industry, which comprises a multitude of professionals operating both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. The group underscores the depth of the problem’s impact and the urgent need for legislative measures to combat it.

“Enabling online site blocking represents a critical step forward in our journey towards creating a safer digital landscape. It’s about empowering our creators and ensuring that they are safeguarded against the unfair practices of online piracy. With this measure, we look forward to a future where Filipino talent is free from the constraints of digital theft,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

The proposal to allow online site blocking under the 26-year-old Intellectual Property Code seeks to protect both the creative industry and consumers by curbing the proliferation of pirate websites and prevent legitimate content businesses from suffering revenue loss due to online theft.

Albay 2nd District Rep. Joey Salceda’s House Bill No. 7600, which seeks this amendment, was already passed by the House of Representatives almost a year ago. Counterpart bills in the Senate, introduced by Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., both actors, have yet to advance.

These separate legislations aim to update and strengthen the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines by enhancing the enforcement capabilities of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) against piracy.

The bills also seek to remove the IP Code’s existing limitations by broadening its scope to encompass electronic and online content within the definition of pirated goods.

Through its #PlayItRight campaign, Globe has been actively combating online piracy and championing a responsible digital ecosystem for the past six years. The company is convinced that the IP Code amendment will protect the rights and livelihood of content creators and industries reliant on intellectual creativity, as well as foster ethical consumption and distribution of digital content.

To provide an interim site-blocking measure pending passage of amendment bill, Globe earlier joined forces with the IPOPHL and four leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a site-blocking mechanism targeting pirate sites, marking Asia’s first initiative of its kind.

Savings in fuel, power total PHP6.9 million

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has successfully completed its innovative pilot program featuring hybrid solar power, marking a major step forward in greener network operations. This milestone aligns with the company’s firm commitment to sustainability and its goal to achieve Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions by 2050.

The program, which ran from 2022 to 2023, focused on integrating hybrid solar power across 26 diverse Globe sites – three in the National Capital Region (NCR), 17 in South Luzon, and six in Mindanao.

The sites include off-grid towers traditionally dependent on diesel gensets but can be fully powered either solely by renewable energy with battery energy storage system or a combination of renewables and diesel fuel. The technology was also tested in bad-grid tower sites experiencing frequent power outages and in good-grid tower sites that utilize a mix of coal and renewable energy sources from the power grid.

Results of the initiative have been remarkable, with Globe saving an estimated of over 119,000 liters of diesel fuel and avoiding over 67,000 kWh of electricity consumption, equating to approximately PHP6.9M in savings. These figures not only highlight the program’s effectiveness in reducing environmental impact but also underscore the potential for cost savings and efficiency improvements in sustainable energy solutions.

Joel Agustin, Globe Network Planning and Engineering Head, commented, “Successfully implementing hybrid solar power across multiple sites represents a big leap in our efforts to decarbonize our operations. Beyond demonstrating our dedication to environmental stewardship, it also cements Globe’s status as the Most Sustainability-Driven Network Operator in the Philippines.”

Traditionally, Globe’s cell sites have relied on electricity from the national power grid, a significant portion of which comes from coal, and conventional diesel gensets for backup power. But the shift to sustainable sources became an imperative, especially for sites without commercial power-grid connectivity or with unreliable grid conditions. They typically relied on traditional gensets operating continuously.

Globe’s hybrid solar power solution incorporates several innovative features. It includes a Solar Mini-Grid that can be built within the facility or adjacent area, offering scalable capacity and adaptability. This system provides direct power to on-site equipment, making it ideal for deployment in challenging terrains.

The solution also includes an Advanced Solar Hybrid solution, an intelligent off-grid alternative power system that primarily uses solar energy, switching to the rectifier battery system and diesel genset as needed.

Encouraged by the promising results, Globe is set to progressively deploy its hybrid solar power technology across its cell sites. The company is actively pursuing green solutions and innovations that will reduce its network’s GHG and overall carbon footprint. This approach reflects Globe’s deep-rooted commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate citizenship.

Despite its recent introduction, GFiber Prepaid has recorded the highest reload rate and loader ARPU among Globe’s prepaid offerings. In its ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery, Globe deployed over 199,000 fiber-to-the-home lines in 2023, while utilizing its existing fiber inventory. This effort is part of the company’s broader strategy to cater to the underserved prepaid fiber market, further strengthening its leadership in the Philippine telecom industry.

In a recent press release by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the MMDA recently approved its Regulation No. 24-022 series of 2024, declaring that e-bikes, e-trikes, as well as tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and kuligligs are not allowed to traverse national roads, circumferential, and radial roads in Metro Manila.

Gogoro Philippines would like to clarify that the Gogoro SuperSport, Gogoro Delight, and Gogoro S2 Premium are Category L3 e-motorcycles, which are two-wheeled vehicles capable of running more than 50km/hr. In accordance with Land Transportation Office’s Administrative Order No. 2021-0039, these vehicles are subject to LTO registration and require a driver’s license to operate. They are also allowed on all types of roads including national roads, circumferential roads, and radial roads except in limited access highways such as expressways.

Together with the MMDA and our other national agency partners, we will continue to promote road safety and compliance with road rules and regulations.

The government is in the final stages of developing the Connectivity Index Rating (CIR) Metric, a groundbreaking effort aimed at ensuring that Filipinos across the nation have access to reliable and high-quality digital services.

A collaboration among Globe, other telcos, and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the CIR is designed to standardize the measurement of internet quality in public spaces, including airports, hotels, and offices.

The initiative, which was tackled at the Globe R.I.S.E. 3.0 event, aligns with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), with parallel goals of leaving no one behind in the digital age.

DICT Undersecretary Jeff Dy articulated the government’s dedication to this vision, highlighting the importance of elevating the country’s connectivity to accelerate national growth and achieve comprehensive digital inclusivity.

“Wouldn’t it be nice that before you even check into a hotel, you would be able to know if you could do business in that particular hotel? That’s the idea: To keep people informed of the quality of Internet connection in that particular establishment,” said Dy.

The CIR Metric focuses on two critical aspects: Quality and Availability of internet services, prioritizing user experience over business-centric benchmarks. The goal is to inform and empower consumers, allowing them to make informed decisions based on the internet quality of various establishments.

Exemptions will be made for smaller businesses, and private sector participation will be voluntary, fostering an environment of trust and transparency.

Dy said the CIR Metric is based on tried-and-tested methods for enhancing digital connectivity, referencing the successful adoption of similar standards in the European Union and South Korea.

Globe Group President and CEO Ernest Cu reinforced Dy’s perspective saying, “connectivity is the backbone of anything digital.” This affirmation underlines the essential nature of robust digital infrastructure for advancing technological and societal progress.

“Strong connectivity is the foundation of digital solutions, which we at Globe continue to develop to uplift the lives of our kababayans. We look at what other issues can be solved digitally, wherein Globe has the assets, brand permission, or even capability permission to build solutions,” Cu said.

The CIR is part of a broader government strategy that includes developing policies that will serve to expand and enhance connectivity nationwide.

Globe’s ongoing collaboration with the government on initiatives such as the CIR underscores the company’s commitment to utilizing digital solutions for addressing various challenges, heralding a future of endless opportunities for the Philippines.
