Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) Secretary Ernesto V. Perez speaks at Globe’s recent R.I.S.E. 3.0, an event that brought together key stakeholders to advance equitable connectivity across the country.

The government’s implementation of Executive Order No. 32 has led to a surge in ICT permit applications, reflecting the success of a streamlined procedure for infrastructure builds.

Launched with the intent to eliminate red tape and digitize the permitting process, EO No. 32 has dramatically simplified the regulatory landscape for telcos, facilitating an unprecedented increase in the construction of critical digital infrastructure.

Following issuance of the order in July 2023, the government has logged 26,000 permits for the construction of ICT infrastructure, accelerating efforts to improve connectivity nationwide, said Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) Secretary Ernesto V. Perez. This rapid progress has led to improved internet accessibility and speed across the nation.

During his address at Globe’s recent R.I.S.E. 3.0 event, Perez said EO No. 32 reflects the government’s deep commitment to enhancing national connectivity and digital services, a cornerstone in its strategy to drive economic growth and improve quality of life for Filipinos across the country.

The initiative’s streamlining and digitization efforts have significantly boosted government revenues and drastically cut down permit acquisition time for businesses, fostering a healthier business environment. It is also helpful in combating corruption, steering the Philippines toward a governance model marked by efficiency, transparency, and accountability, aligned with global best practices.

“Evidence shows that if you streamline and digitize processes, you will not only encourage people to abide by the rules and regulations, but it will also result in much revenue collection for the country,” Perez shared.

Local Government Units (LGUs) have been at the forefront of adopting these changes, with some now processing business permits in as fast as 20 minutes, a testament to the initiative’s success in cutting down bureaucratic inefficiencies.

The reform has also paved the way for extending digital services to underserved areas to ensure that remote regions are not left behind in the digital transformation journey.

Firmly committed to creating a “Globe of Good,” the Globe Group is steadfast in its collaboration with government bodies to enhance the digital landscape for Filipinos, aiming to elevate connectivity, streamline access to services, and improve overall efficiency.

Globe underscores the vital role of public-private collaborations in driving forward national development, showcasing a united effort to forge a future where technology and connectivity play a central role in enhancing the quality of life for all.

Globe announced a recalibration of its cash capital expenditure (capex) this year, optimizing the spend to maximize network infrastructure investments. This streamlined spending is consistent with the company’s efforts to improve current and future network efficiency to sustain growth and enhance the digital experiences of Filipinos.

The company invested a total of PHP70.6 billion in cash capex for 2023, 30% lower than the previous year. This reduced level of spending reflects Globe’s commitment to capital efficiency and network maximization, following record-high network investments in the prior years.

For 2024, Globe aims to further lower its cash capex spend, setting a full year guidance of US$1 billion, lower than US$1.3 billion invested in 2023. These network investments are expected to further drop by 2025, decreasing to below US$1 billion by 2025 as part of Globe’s broader strategy to bring capex-to-revenue down to the level of its regional peers.

Globe’s capex-to-revenue ratio has decreased considerably from 64% in 2022 to 44% in 2023, illustrating its active effort to maximize its network investments and focus on capital efficiency. Cash capex spending in 2024 is expected to equate to approximately 30 to 35% of total gross service revenues for the year, and is targeted to be even lower in the subsequent year.

A total of 91% of the 2023 cash capex spending was dedicated to bolstering the data infrastructure of the company to provide better and more meaningful digital experiences for its customers, amid steadily rising demand for data connectivity.

With the heavy investments the past 3 years, Globe is now reaping the benefits of an expanded network. Due to the opportunistic investments of the past years, Globe was able to lower purchase order (PO) issuances in 2023, without sacrificing the quality of the network.

Total PO issuances in 2023 amounted to US$600 million, which is less than half of the actual cash capex spend for the year and approximately 36% of the average annual PO issuances of the company from 2018 to 2022. This conscious effort to lower PO issuances is a leading indicator of Globe’s future cash capex payment levels and is instrumental in its plan to return to positive free cash flow territory.

“For 2024, our focus is on optimizing the use of our network to be able to deliver topline growth of low to middle single digits as well as maintain our EBITDA margin at 50% for the year. Supported by the delivery of our 2024 guidance, the objective is for us to return to positive free cash flow by 2025,” said Rizza Maniego-Eala, Globe’s Chief Finance Officer.

Cash capex spending for the year will be financed by a combination of internally generated cash flows, debt financing, as well as proceeds from tower sales, which is expected to be completed by the first half of 2024.

Globe’s cash capex streamlining and its focus on optimization and efficiency demonstrate the company’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in the telecom industry, while ensuring the delivery of high-quality digital experiences to its customers across the country.

The sun wasn’t even out yet when 47 Globe volunteers arrived at the SM North Edsa Sky Dome one early morning on a special mission: to help turn senior citizens into #SeniorDigizens.

Throughout the four-hour “Teach Me How To Digi” Learning Session on January 25, the volunteers assisted some 200 seniors as they went through lessons on digital skills, including Smartphone 101, and using email and life-enabling apps such as the GlobeOne app, GCash and KonsultaMD.

One of them was Jerome Callueng from Globe’s Channel Management Group, a “lola’s boy” who signed up because we knew how seniors struggle with using digital technology.

“Lola’s boy kasi ako. So before my lola died, she ventured into iPads and other devices. I found out nahihirapan siya. I wanted to help the senior citizens given na alam ko ‘yung hirap ng senior citizens natin when they’re dealing with technology or digital electronics,” said Callueng.

Janette Patricia Guillen from Globe’s Information Systems Group (ISG), meanwhile, volunteered so she could “give back to the community.”

“Not through money, but through time, effort and skills. Di ba kasi maraming klase ng giving back to the community or volunteering? For me, I wanted to give my time and effort,” she said.

Guillen’s colleague in the ISG, Joseph Manalang, said volunteering for the #SeniorDigizen campaign was an opportunity to support seniors given their vulnerability to fraudsters.

“Of course, para hindi sila maloko ng mga scammer. Kasi ‘yun ang mga challenges nga mga titos, titas, and seniors natin eh. ‘Yung tita ko ngang isa, muntik na eh. So every time na may matatanggap siya [na scam text] sabi ko pumunta sa’kin so I can verify. So ‘yun dapat ang i-extend natin to others so that they can understand, di ba? Sila ‘yung pinaka-vulnerable eh, senior citizens natin. Kaya opportunity ito,” Manalang said.

Pinky Salvanera, a developer at Globe’s Frontstage Engineering and Enterprise Intergration, said she wanted to see for herself the challenges that seniors encounter in using apps, including GlobeOne, which she helped develop.

Gusto ko makita firsthand ano nagiging challenges nila sa app. Tapos ‘pag hingan kami ng suggestions, feeling ko makaka-contribute ako dahil narinig ko ‘yung side ng consumer,” she said.

Meanwhile, Joycelyn Mendoza from Globe’s Customer Experience Management Team said that through volunteering, she learned the importance of building trust with customers.

“I joined the volunteer program with the intention of learning how to effectively introduce digital literacy to individuals who may not be technologically savvy, particularly our senior citizens. Participating in this event allowed me to directly assist our customers, enabling me to gain insights into their struggles and perspectives. This knowledge can help us become better in advocating improvements and crafting customer education initiatives tailored to their needs,” said Mendoza.

Volunteers were crucial in the #SeniorDigizen learning session as seniors needed hands-on support during the tutorials.

“We are grateful to our volunteers who gave their time and energy to help our seniors during the #SeniorDigizen Learning Session. They put customer centricity to action by providing immediate support to participants who had questions and clarifications during the session,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

The #SeniorDigizen campaign aims to ensure that Filipino seniors are not left behind in the digitalization journey. By improving their digital skills, Globe aims to help them overcome apprehensions and misconceptions about digital technology, and protect them from fraud and other risks that lurk online.

Affirming its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, Globe has maintained its CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) score of “B” for the third consecutive year, the highest among Philippine telcos in 2023.

The CDP, a renowned not-for-profit charity, operates a global disclosure system for managing environmental impacts, recognized as the gold standard of environmental reporting. It provides the most comprehensive dataset on corporate and city action towards managing and mitigating environmental risks.

With its B score for 2023, Globe has entered the CDP Management band, a distinction achievable only by surpassing a threshold percentage of available awareness points. This achievement involves demonstrating a broad assessment of environmental issues and a fundamental awareness of how these issues intersect with its business operations.

“We understand the critical role we play in mitigating climate change and are dedicated to operationalizing our climate action in ways that are both impactful and sustainable. This recognition reaffirms our resolve to continue advancing our sustainability agenda, driving positive change within our industry and beyond,” said Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer at the Globe Group.

Globe has operationalized its climate action programs through several innovative strategies. So far, it has transitioned 27 sites to renewable energy and is exploring alternative energy solutions such as solar hybrid gensets and onsite solar panels, particularly for high-energy utilization sites.

Globe has also deployed over 9,000 green network solutions, including cleaner fuel technologies, energy-efficient cooling systems, and battery solutions that support the shift towards renewable energy. It also utilizes intelligent monitoring systems to optimize energy usage and maintenance operations, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of its network infrastructure.

In addition to operational strategies, Globe engages its supply chain in its sustainability journey. The company’s Supplier Code of Ethics and sustainability criteria for supplier assessment ensure that its vendors align with Globe’s sustainability standards.
Likewise, the Sustainability Academy for the Supply Chain empowers Globe’s suppliers with essential Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and practices, ensuring these values are embedded in their business strategies.

Globe’s continued recognition by the CDP highlights its leadership in environmental transparency and action within the country’s telecom sector. These achievements serve as a model for how companies can effectively integrate environmental stewardship into their business operations and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient economy.

Globe has fired up the PDSCN Express Route connecting Luzon to Mindanao, a milestone in its push for equitable connectivity across the country.

In a major milestone in its network expansion, Globe has activated a segment of the Philippine Domestic Submarine Cable Network (PDSCN) from Luzon to Mindanao, signaling the start of on-ground connections to serve more customers.

Globe’s segment in the PDSCN Express Route was lit up on February 5, covering the following points:

Lucena City, Quezon
Boac, Marinduque
Calatrava, Tablas Island, Romblon
Roxas City, Capiz
Placer, Masbate
Palompon, Leyte
Mactan, Cebu
Talisay City, Cebu
Tagbilaran City, Bohol
Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental

“The activation of the PDSCN Express Route marks another milestone in our journey towards providing inclusive connectivity across the archipelago, especially in underserved and unserved areas. It will also enhance the reliability and resilience of our network given the country’s vulnerability to disasters and calamities,” said Joel Agustin, Globe SVP and Head of Network Planning and Engineering.

Agustin said Globe has also completed 90% of cable landing stations across the archipelago under the $150-million subsea cable project. Cable landing stations are crucial landing points for undersea fiber-optic cables, which transmit vast amounts of internet data across oceans.

“The wet segment was finished as scheduled last year. Our focus now is connecting our inland facilities. So far we have completed 90 percent and we are completing the rest by this year,” he said.

PDSCN, Globe’s fourth domestic submarine backbone, will help boost connectivity to improve customer experience for both household and business clients. It comes as a crucial addition to Globe’s network infrastructure amid increasing connectivity needs, and will serve to minimize service downtime, help ensure business continuity, and improve network security and overall efficiency.

A joint project of Globe, Eastern Communications, and InfiniVAN Inc., PDSCN covers a total cable distance of 2,500 kilometers, the longest of its kind in the country.  It kicked off in Subic Bay, Zambales, in July 2022 and laid cables in 24 segments with a total 33 landing sites connecting Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

“PDSCN is a vital component of our network expansion program and proof of our unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide in the Philippines. We firmly believe in improving the country’s digital infrastructure to achieve a more inclusive and equitable digital future for all Filipinos,” said Agustin.

The company’s push for a #1stWorldNetwork is in support of the government’s digital transformation goals to improve connectivity across the country.

PDSCN is a critical pillar of the Digital Infrastructure sector under the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), an organization formed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to enhance public-private collaboration toward inclusive national development. As a member of PSAC, Globe Group President and CEO Ernest Cu helps ensure that the benefits of the country’s digital transformation are accessible to all Filipinos.

Globe reached a financial milestone for 2023, achieving a record consolidated EBITDA or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization of PHP81.4 billion, a 3% increase from the previous year’s PHP79.1 billion.

This growth is attributed to a healthy 3% expansion in the company’s topline, effectively balancing the rise in operating expenses. It underscores Globe’s operational excellence and strategic focus, resulting in an EBITDA margin of 50%, aligned with its full-year guidance.

“The solid EBITDA growth this year underscores our robust financial condition and our capability to continue expanding and achieving profitability amidst steep competition. It’s a clear indicator of our unwavering dedication to deliver exceptional value to our customers and investors alike,” said Ernest Cu, Globe Group President and CEO.

Globe’s EBITDA achievement was propelled by an unprecedented consolidated service revenue of PHP162.3 billion, also 3% higher than the prior year’s PHP158.0 billion. This was fueled by a focus on mobile, corporate data, and the expanding non-telco services sector.

The company’s steadfast commitment to digital innovation saw data revenues swell to 83% of total service revenues in 2023 from 81% in 2022, with the digital lifestyle becoming an integral part of Filipino life.

The mobile segment, a cornerstone of Globe’s success, reported an all-time high revenue of PHP112.4 billion in 2023, or a 5% year-on-year growth. This surge was primarily driven by the prepaid sector’s response to affordable mobile devices and an increased appetite for high-bandwidth online video and social media content over smartphones.

Mobile data revenues climbed to PHP90.9 billion, accounting for 81% of total mobile revenues and signifying a shift towards data-driven consumer engagement.

Corporate data revenues soared to PHP18.3 billion, marking the highest in Globe’s history, reflecting a 7% increase from the previous year. It highlights Globe’s pivotal role in the digital transformation journey of enterprises across the Philippines.

Innovation extends beyond traditional telecom services, with non-telco revenues reporting an 18% yearly growth, representing 3% of total consolidated service revenues from 2.6% last year. This was achieved despite the deconsolidation of ECPay from Globe’s books with the sale of its 77% stake in ECPay to Mynt last September 2023.*

Looking ahead, Globe is poised for continued growth, driven by a customer-centric strategy and commitment to digital solutions and network excellence. Its focus on capital efficiency and network development, including significant investments in 5G and fiber technologies, sets the stage for Globe to lead the digital transformation in the Philippines and beyond.

Atty. Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe Group’s Chief Privacy Officer, speaks in a fireside chat themed “Cybersecurity capacity building needs in the Philippines and the UK” at the recent UK Cybersecurity Reception.

Globe Group and the British Embassy in the Philippines have come together to bolster the Philippines’ digital infrastructure defenses. This support was a focal point of discussion at the UK Cybersecurity Reception, an event that highlighted the critical need for enhanced cybersecurity measures in the country.

During the Fireside Chat on “Cybersecurity capacity building needs in the Philippines and the UK,” Atty. Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe Group’s Chief Privacy Officer, articulated the company’s extensive measures in combating the digital threats intensified by the pandemic.

She noted Globe’s combined strategy of technological advancement, talent development, and public awareness, which includes offering cybersecurity solutions, implementing robust content filtering systems, and spearheading educational initiatives.

“The reason why scams and spam messages are so rampant now is because they (fraudsters) want to get customer data. And so we’re impressing upon our customers and partners the importance of having the right cybersecurity culture and using the appropriate cybersecurity solutions,” said Almeida.

Globe has recently poured in nearly $90 million in cybersecurity alone on top of its $20 million infrastructure investment to combat spam and scam messages. It also has a team of 97 people focused on information security and data privacy.

Together with sophisticated cyber tools and dedicated manpower, the company ensures that its employees and customers are protected online through initiatives such as the Digital Thumbprint Program in partnership with the Department of Education and “Safe Space: A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy,” a data privacy book for children developed with the support of the National Privacy Commission.

“We prioritize education and awareness across the Globe Group. It’s really important that we know how to practice online safety in our day-to-day activities,” she added.

British Ambassador to the Philippines, Laure Beaufils, on the other hand, shared the United Kingdom’s goal of strengthening the cybersecurity partnership with the Philippines by identifying opportunities for collaboration and sharing best practices on how to address collective challenges in cybersecurity.

“Cybersecurity must be a top priority for both the United Kingdom and the Philippines in order to ensure the safety and security of our citizens and promote economic development and prosperity. The digital landscape is an integral part of our daily lives, from critical infrastructure to personal communications, and protecting it is essential to safeguarding our economic prosperity and national security,” she said. “The Philippines and the UK alike are prioritizing defending their citizens against cyberattacks and we are pleased to be working together.”

Beaufils mentioned the UK’s collaboration initiatives, including the first UK-South East Asia Women in Cyber Fellowship, where Almeida was a delegate, and Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) Assistant Secretary Mary Rose Magsaysay is joining as a mentor. The programme will empower women from the South East Asia region by providing networking opportunities, access to speakers and expertise from the UK and South East Asia. Another one is the £13M Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund’s cyber package, aimed at enhancing cybersecurity capabilities in the Philippines.

The UK Cybersecurity Reception underscored the need for a multi-faceted approach to address cybersecurity challenges. The event brought together government officials, industry leaders, and cybersecurity experts to share insights and strategies for a more secure digital environment. The discussions focused on the importance of public-private partnerships, international cooperation, and the need for continuous innovation in cybersecurity technologies and practices.

The commitment from Globe Group and the British Embassy to assist the Philippine government in its cybersecurity efforts emphasizes the global nature of cyber threats and the importance of collaborative approaches to address these challenges effectively.

Globe has registered an impressive 73.7% reduction in blocked spam and scam SMS related to banks in 2023, a notable achievement in its ongoing fight against financial fraud.

Globe intercepted 21.9 million bank-related spam and scam SMS in 2023, marking a sharp decline from the 83.39 million messages blocked the previous year. This accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of the company’s proactive strategies and its robust partnerships with the country’s major banks and financial institutions.

Globe earlier forged anti-fraud pacts with the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), encompassing 45 major banks, and various individual players in the finance sector to enable vigorous and timely data and intelligence-sharing, aligning efforts to prevent and investigate fraud more effectively.

“This milestone not only highlights our commitment to combating financial fraud but also encourages us to continuously enhance our security measures for the protection of our customers,” said Anton Bonifacio, Chief Information Security Officer at Globe.

Globe has invested about US$20 million to enhance its spam and scam SMS detection and blocking system and operates a round-the-clock Security Operations Center to filter out unwanted messages, including app-to-person and person-to-person SMS from international and domestic sources.

“Despite facing certain limitations, our dedication to customer protection remains unwavering,” added Bonifacio. “The fight against fraud requires a unified approach, as it affects everyone. Alongside utilizing cutting-edge technology, we are committed to strengthening our alliances with key stakeholders and escalating our efforts to combat these fraudulent activities.”

As the company continues to advance its technologies and collaborations, it remains dedicated to providing a safer and more secure digital environment for its customers.

Globe’s #SeniorDigizen campaign helps elderly overcome fear of tech

Tech rockstar Ernest Cu, President and CEO of leading digital solutions platform Globe Group, has called on Filipino senior citizens to embrace new technology, saying tech-driven solutions are designed to make day-to-day life easier.

Ahead of Globe’s inaugural “Teach Me How to Digi” learning session set January 25, Cu dispelled fears about new tech, saying digitalizing seniors is crucial as more services and activities will go digital in the coming years.

“It’s really very important that our senior citizens learn digital skills because in the future a lot of services will truly become only digital. We have to help seniors overcome their fear, and I guarantee you that once you try it, it’s going to be as easy or much easier than the old manual way,” said Cu, an early tech adopter.

“Like e-money for instance. We don’t hold cash anymore, we don’t hold coins anymore, which is a pet peeve of mine. When they give you change back it’s really a pain where you keep it. These things are there to make life easier, not make life difficult,” he added.

As the leader of a fast-expanding technology company, Cu, 63, is a digital-first senior as he believes automation is key in improving quality of life.

“I believe in efficiency. I believe in convenience. I believe in using automation to improve one’s life. l I hate the manual way of doing things. If I can automate it, I will. I’m an early adopter. I’ve found that they have been very beneficial to my way of life and it’s made my daily life much easier. And so from that point on, I’ve lost my fear of anything new. I like trying and being the first to try something new and you know, if it works, I adopt it in my daily life. If it doesn’t, I dump it. There’s no harm in trying. Who knows? It (going digital) may be the next best thing you’ve ever done in your life,” said Cu.

But for the majority of Filipino seniors, it’s the other way around.

A 2021 report by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies showed that out of digital literacy levels under six ICT indicators of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Filipinos 65 and up were among age groups with the lowest digital literacy levels. Among seniors, just about 18 percent had at least one ICT skill.

A study on Filipino seniors’ smartphone use published in the International Federation for Home Economics, meanwhile, found that while the Filipino elderly know the importance of using smartphones for communication, they “are not very interested” in its unique features such as using apps, which they find challenging.

This underlines the importance of helping Filipino seniors through their digital journey.

Sa ating mga seniors, ang technology ay hindi nakakatakot. Hindi mahirap. Ang mahirap lang is to overcome the fear and gain the trust that using new technology will be much easier, will make your lives much more convenient, and make things faster. It’s just a matter of trying it. And if you do try, I can almost guarantee you, you’ll enjoy it.  So don’t be overcome by the thought of technology. Don’t be intimidated. Try it and I’m sure you will like it,” Cu said.

To bridge this digital divide, Globe is helping Filipino seniors overcome the tech barrier, launching the Globe #SeniorDigizen campaign through a learning session on January 25. The event will gather over 200 senior citizens at the SM North Sky Dome, where they will learn the basics of using smartphones, setting up an email account, and using apps such as GCash, KonsultaMD and the GlobeOne app.

The campaign is in line with Globe’s push for digital inclusion, as it believes technology is key in addressing everyday pain points and uplifting Filipino lives.

Globe recently deployed its latest connectivity solution CALF at the Tawi-Tawi airport.

Leading digital solutions platform Globe has unveiled its latest technological innovation to readily provide connectivity at times of disasters, emergencies and high-demand situations.

CALF, or Cellsite At Less Footprint, is a groundbreaking compact solution engineered to provide immediate and efficient voice, SMS, and mobile data services during emergencies and high-demand situations such as major outdoor events, all within a limited space.

Derived from its predecessor COW (Cellsite on Wheels), CALF is designed to serve a wide range of applications, from disaster response and recovery efforts to special events and targeted local network deployments that require additional capacity.

It was designed and tailor-made by Globe engineers in response to requirements in Philippine communities.

“Globe has always been at the forefront of technology innovations. We bring in fresh ideas from purpose-driven employees to formulate innovative solutions and deploy them to serve customers well. We create great things and make them available to everyone,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy & Innovations at Globe.

The versatile technology stands out for its minimal equipment requirement: a 220V power source and a modest 2×2 meter land space for its pole structure.

Its Quick Installation and Deployment feature enables rapid implementation and immediate activation within the same day. This significantly reduces the need for extensive manpower and numerous vehicles, streamlining and simplifying the deployment process while also cutting down on capital expenditures and operational expenses.

As a temporary mobile solution, CALF offers a coverage range from 10 meters to several kilometers while maintaining lower power consumption. It surpasses recent developments in other countries, such as the portable mobile tower featuring an antenna that extends only up to eight meters but can be adjusted for optimized signal strength.

Unlike the portable mobile tower, which relies solely on fiber or radio links to connect, CALF can utilize Fiber, Microwave, and Satellite Backhaul for seamless connection to the central office.

Globe recently deployed CALF at the Tawi-Tawi Airport, immediately providing much needed connectivity at the critical facility.

“With its portability and power, CALF can be readily deployed in various situations, including emergencies and big events that need additional capacity. Through this solution, we hope to provide an agile response to connectivity demand,” said Tan.

Globe’s commitment to innovation and customer service is evident in the launch of CALF, which is set to significantly enhance the company’s ability to respond to emergencies and special events, reinforcing its position as a leader in the telecom industry.

Leading digital solutions platform Globe made a significant stride in ensuring online safety for children in 2023, blocking a total 489,849 child pornography sites last year, a 22 percent jump from the 401,487 sites blocked in 2022.

The number of disabled URLs hosting lewd content went up by 21.8 percent, reaching 486,802 in 2023 from 399,550 in the previous year. The figure for blocked domains also saw a 56.5 percent surge to 3,047 in 2023 from 1,947 in the same period the year before.

“We believe that a safer digital environment for our children requires a multi-pronged approach. Beyond blocking harmful content, we want to foster a culture of vigilance, awareness, and collaboration to protect the most vulnerable members of our society from the pervasive threats that lurk online,” said Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief Information Security Officer.

In collaboration with the government and other stakeholders, Globe continues to enhance its capabilities to detect and block access to child pornography and other illegal sites.

Through its #MakeITSafePH campaign launched in 2017, Globe has been actively aligning its efforts with the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (Republic Act 9775). This law requires all internet service providers (ISPs) to deploy technologies that prevent access to or transmission of child pornography.

Globe earlier invested $2.7 million in content filtering systems to upgrade its site-blocking capabilities. It works with government agencies and local and international organizations to bolster child protection online.

The Philippines is a leading source of OSAEC (online sexual abuse and exploitation of children content), according to the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This underscores the imperative for a sustained effort to protect children online.
