MANILA – Metro Manila police officers seized P85.8 million worth of illegal drugs during two days of operations, NCRPO Chief Maj. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported on Friday (17 May 2024).

According to Nartatez, the confiscated drugs included 12.6 kg of shabu and 165 grams of marijuana, with a total estimated street value of P85,882,256. The contraband was seized in 31 operations conducted from May 16 to 17, leading to the arrest of 51 suspects.

The suspects are facing charges for violating Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The operations spanned the five districts under the NCRPO: the Manila Police District (MPD), Quezon City Police District (QCPD), Northern Police District (NPD), Southern Police District (SPD), and Eastern Police District (EPD).

Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., speaking at the opening of the 33rd Session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ33) in Vienna, Austria on May 13, highlighted the administration’s efforts under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to combat crime.

He noted that supply reduction efforts in the war against drugs have resulted in the seizure of approximately USD587 million worth of illegal drugs in the administration’s first two years, marking a 700 percent increase from previous years, with minimal loss of life.

support to PHL volleyball

MALACAÑANG has thrown its full support for five major international volleyball competitions the country is hosting for the second semester of the year beginning with the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Challenge Cup that kicks off on Wednesday (May 22) at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

In Memorandum Circular 49 dated May 13 and signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered “all government agencies and instrumentalities, including government-owned or controlled corporations, are hereby directed, and all local government units are encouraged, to extend full support to the Philippine hosting of volleyball and beach volleyball events in 2024.”

Besides the AVC Women’s Challenge Cup, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) has lined up the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Men’s Week Three from June 18 to 23 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, Volleyball World Challenger Cup from July 4to 7 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Southeast Asia Volleyball League for Men and Women from August 13 to 25 at the City of Santa Rosa Sports Complex and the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge from November 28 to December 1 at the Nuvali Sand Courts by Ayala Land also in Santa Rosa.

“We are grateful to President Marcos Jr. and to Executive Secretary Bersamin for their support, which the PNVF believes would help further elevate Philippine volleyball to world-class level,” PNVF president Ramon “Tats” Suzara said.

Ten countries are seeing action in the AVC Women’s Challenge Cup—Alas Pilipinas Women, Indonesia, Chinese-Taipei, Australia and Iran in Pool A and defending champion Vietnam, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan in Pool B.

The pool rounds on Wednesday pits Singapore against Kazakhstan at 10 a.m., Indonesia against Iran at 1 p.m., Vietnam against Hong Kong at 4 p.m. and Australia against Chinese Taipei at 7 p.m.

The Alas Pilipinas Women coached by Brazilian Jorge Edson Souza de Brito will see action against Australia at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The Alas Women is composed of Fifi Sharma, Vanie Gandler, Faith Nisperos, Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Jia Morado De Guzman, Eya Laure, Dell Palomata, Cherry Nunag, Jennifer Nierva, Sisi Rondina, Aly Solomon, Angel Canino, Bella Belen, Casiey Dongallo, Julia Coronel and Thea Gagate.

FOLLOWING a heavy downpour on Saturday, parts of Metro Manila experienced flash floods, as reported by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The MMDA’s public information office provided the following information on flooded areas at the time of posting:

Ortigas flyover northbound on-ramp – Water level reached 6 inches.
Edsa Gate 3 Aguinaldo – Water level rose to 14 inches.
Santolan northbound Edsa flyover on-ramp – The flood was gutter-deep.
Araneta/E. Rodriguez – Water level recorded at 5 inches.
Edsa Balintawak northbound – Flood depth measured at 4 inches.
España – Antipolo – Water reached 6 inches (half gutter).
España-Dela Fuente – The flood measured 8 inches (gutter).
España – Antipolo – Submerged in 17 inches of water (knee-deep).
Edsa southbound Panay Ave towards Mo. Ignacia – Flood depth recorded at 8 inches (gutter).
Edsa northbound Centris – The flood depth was 8 inches (gutter).
España Vicente Cruz – Water reached 8 inches (gutter).
Edsa Centris northbound – Flood depth recorded at 10 inches (half knee).
España Dela Fuente – Submerged in 12 inches of water (half tire).
East Ave – National Kidney – The flood measured 13 inches (half tire).
Edsa northbound After Gate 3 Camp Aguinaldo – Knee-deep water at 19 inches.
Edsa northbound After Gate 3 Camp Aguinaldo – Water levels had subsided.

To manage the situation, the MMDA deployed traffic enforcers in the affected areas.
