MANILA — As the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday (14 June 2024) condemned the recent Houthi rebels’ attack on a Greek-owned and Liberia-flagged freighter MV Tutor while traversing the Red Sea and the seizure of 22 Filipino seafarers, the victims appealed to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to be rescued immediately, citing their worst conditions in captivity.

“Sa mahal naming Pangulo ng Pilipinas, Pangulong Bongbong Marcos, sana ma-rescue na kami at sana mailigtas na po kami para mapanatag ang aming mga pamilya sa Pilipinas na naghihintay sa amin,” one of the Filipino seafarers said.

Emerson Loria, a crew member of MV Tutor, managed to send a message revealing that around 22 Filipino seafarers were on board the MV Tutor, including the captain.

An unmanned boat with explosives suddenly hit their vessel, which was carrying coal to be sent to Israel.

He said one of the seafarers stationed at the engine room was missing after the explosion.

The Houthis have been launching sea attacks over Israel’s war on Gaza.

“Nahihirapan na po kami dito, mainit, kulang sa pagkain, yung tubig limited na lang pati yung diesel, ginagamit na lang pang emergency sa generator, wala pa ring rescue, puro promises,” an unidentified seafarer cried.

It was gathered that the rebels continued to hold MV Galaxy Leader with 17 Filipino crew.

The DFA said the attack took place last Wednesday (12 June 2024) but kept mum how many Filipinos were on board.

“The Philippine government will take all necessary measures to secure the safety and well-being of the Filipino crew on board and ensure justice… We remain steadfast in ensuring the safety and welfare of all Filipino seafarers worldwide,” the DFA said in a statement.
