Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco and Qatar’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Soltan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, sealed the agreement in the presence of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at Manila’s Malacañang Palace.

The signing, which took place during Qatar Amir’s state visit, marks a significant step toward enhancing collaboration between the two nations.

Frasco hailed the MOU as a gateway to abundant growth opportunities, emphasizing the shared commitment to showcasing the richness of Filipino culture, heritage, and identity to the world. The agreement underscores efforts to boost tourist arrivals in both countries.

Moreover, it outlines plans to stimulate tourism investments, facilitate media and tourism expert familiarization visits, and enhance the skills of tourism operators, employees, and specialists through targeted seminars and training programs.

Recent data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) indicates a notable influx of visitors from Qatar, with 10,438 arrivals recorded in 2023 and 3,784 from January to April 2024.

A joint working team will be established to oversee the implementation of the agreement’s provisions and evaluate its progress.

Frasco highlighted the DOT’s efforts to enhance Muslim-friendly and halal tourism offerings, a move that aligns with the country’s recognition as the Emerging Muslim-friendly Destination of the Year at the Halal in Travel Global Summit 2023.

With the MOU paving the way for deeper cooperation, both the Philippines and Qatar are poised to unlock new avenues for mutual growth and prosperity in the tourism sector.

Manila – Malacañang announced on Friday (12 April 2024)  the establishment of a “stronger” trilateral cooperation between the Philippines, the United States, and Japan, aimed at safeguarding the Indo-Pacific region to ensure “a better future for all.”

This significant trilateral alliance emerged following the inaugural trilateral summit between President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., US President Joe Biden, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House.

“During the historic summit, President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida solidified a stronger trilateral bond with the Philippines, pledging to uphold security in the Indo-Pacific region,” stated Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil.

In his opening address at the trilateral meeting, President Marcos emphasized that the Philippines’ collaboration with the US and Japan is rooted in a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific amid challenges to the international rules-based system.

“Our partnership is not merely pragmatic but a natural evolution of deepening relations and robust cooperation among our three nations, united by a profound commitment to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law,” Marcos conveyed to Biden and Kishida.

Addressing the pressing challenges of the contemporary era demands unified action, a dedication to common objectives, and an unwavering adherence to the rules-based global order, Marcos added, framing the summit as a forward-looking endeavor.

Highlighting the significance of the trilateral summit as a foundational step, Marcos underscored it as an opportunity to chart a collective vision for the future and delineate the strategies for its realization.

Biden reiterated the US’ unwavering defense commitments to Japan and the Philippines, affirming that any aggression against Philippine assets in the South China Sea would trigger the mutual defense treaty.

“The United States’ defense commitments to Japan and the Philippines are unequivocal. As I’ve stated previously, any aggression against Philippine aircraft, vessels, or Armed Forces in the South China Sea would activate our mutual defense treaty,” Biden asserted, characterizing Marcos and Kishida as allies and partners in the landmark assembly.

Describing the new phase of partnership with the Philippines and Japan as emblematic of a “new era,” Biden emphasized the collective aspiration to construct an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, prosperous, and secure through strengthened trilateral bonds.

Kishida reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to bolster its ties with the US and the Philippines, pledging full cooperation for regional peace and stability.

“To secure peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, I aim to reaffirm our commitment to enhancing trilateral cooperation and delineating a concrete path forward through today’s meeting,” Kishida affirmed.

The historic trilateral summit was attended by high-level representatives from each country’s foreign affairs, defense, trade, and energy ministries.

“This landmark summit is the culmination of extensive preparatory engagements between our Foreign Ministries, National Security Advisers, and Vice Ministers, alongside joint maritime exercises and development cooperation,” Marcos remarked.

In parallel, the three nations resolved to deepen economic ties and fortify economic relations, with President Marcos and the two world leaders endeavoring to explore avenues for economic growth, climate resilience, sustained progress, and global peace for future generations.

The US and Japan reiterated their commitment to supporting the Philippines’ endeavors to combat climate change and enhance its economic landscape by fostering industries and generating employment opportunities for Filipinos.

Diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the US have spanned 77 years since their formal establishment on July 4, 1946, while the Philippines and Japan have celebrated 67 years of normalized relations since July 23, 1956, further solidifying their strategic partnership since 2011.

He articulated that the agreement’s focus lies in bolstering cooperation to uphold security and navigation rights in the contested waters of the South China Sea.

Marcos clarified the nature of the agreement, stating, “Well, this is essentially an agreement between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines. Our cooperation in maintaining security and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. That is the essence of it.” He further elucidated that the discussions in Washington would delve into the operational aspects of the cooperation and its implementation.

During his interaction with reporters, Marcos underscored the significance of the summit in fostering strategic partnerships among the three nations. He indicated that the discussions would encompass not only security measures but also economic collaboration, reflecting a multifaceted approach to addressing regional challenges and opportunities.

MANILA — Following China’s latest aggression against Philippine vessels, the United States has reaffirmed its commitment to the mutual defense pact with Manila.

On Saturday (23 March 2024), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported that Chinese vessels yet again used a power water cannon against a civilian vessel chartered to resupply Philippine troops on the BRP Sierra Madre, a World War Two-era ship that was deliberately grounded on Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea to serve as a symbol of the country’s sovereignty.

“The United States stands with its ally the Philippines and condemns the dangerous actions by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) against lawful Philippine maritime operations in the South China Sea on March 23,” US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement, also on Saturday shortly after the incident.

He pointed out that the “US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty extends to armed attacks on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft – including those of its Coast Guard – anywhere in the South China Sea.”

The West Philippine Sea is part of the South China Sea within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The AFP earlier posted X (formerly Twitter) that included videos of the incident of the China Coast Guard training a water cannon at the Unaiza May 4, a ship that had previously been damaged by the same while on a similar mission.

Miller described China’s actions as “destabilizing to the region” and showed “clear disregard for international law.”

MANILA — Cognizant of the various security challenges, including the South China (West Philippine Sea) issue, the Philippines and Sweden have expressed willingness to develop long-term bilateral cooperation.

On Thursday, the Department of National Defense (DND) disclosed that on January 26 Undersecretary Irineo Espino met with Swedish State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Jan Knutsson at the Department of National Defense (DND).

“Both sides looked forward to developing a long-term bilateral cooperation, underscoring the importance of upholding the rules-based international order and strengthening security ties between like-minded countries,” the DND said in a statement.

Espino and Knutsson also tackled climate change, the Ukraine war, cross-strait tensions, and the South China Sea issue.

It was learned during the meeting that Knutsson also presented Sweden’s cost-effective material, primarily its aircraft, as he showcased the country’s strong defense industry to counter threats.

For his part, Espino expressed DND’s interest in cooperating with Sweden in terms of technology transfer and research and development, among others, to protect the Philippines’ sovereignty.

MANILA — Drizzles are expected on Christmas Day due to the convergence of the northeast monsoon, known as “amihan,” and the easterlies across the Philippines.

As of December 25, 2023, 8:07 am, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) indicates that Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, Aurora, and Quezon will experience cloudy skies with rain showers as a result of the northeast monsoon. PAGASA warns of moderate to occasionally heavy rains in these areas, which may lead to flash floods or landslides.

Isolated light rain showers are anticipated in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, excluding Palawan, due to the influence of “amihan.”

Meanwhile, Palawan, Visayas (excluding Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte), and Mindanao (excluding Caraga and Davao Region) are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by the easterlies and localized thunderstorms.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, also due to the easterlies, are forecasted in eastern Visayas and Mindanao, particularly in the regions of Caraga, Davao, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.

MANILA — On early Sunday (10 Dec 2023), a Philippine resupply vessel, Unaiza May 1, collided with a China Coast Guard (CCG) ship, identified as CCG 21556, during a resupply mission to Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal.

The incident, which occurred at 6:39 a.m., was confirmed by United States-based security expert Ray Powell, who monitored the situation using the automatic information system.

Despite the collision, the Philippine government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

This collision took place just a day after CCG ships deployed water cannons against three Philippine vessels near Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal.

The three vessels were en route to provide oil subsidies and groceries to Filipino fishing vessels.

Tensions in the region remain high as maritime incidents between Philippine and Chinese vessels continue to escalate.

MANILA — Following recent defense agreements with the United States and Australia, and ongoing talks for a similar pact with Japan, France has signaled its determination to forge a new partnership with the Philippines.

The commitment was made on Saturday, with France pledging to explore an accord that would enable both nations to deploy troops to each other’s territories.

This development aligns with France’s strategic goal of reinforcing its role in the Asia-Pacific region, amidst the ongoing power dynamics between China and the United States.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro highlighted the shared values and cooperation between France and the Philippines, emphasizing a collaborative approach not only in the South China Sea but also in the broader Pacific area. The aim is to enhance defense cooperation and presence alongside other Oceanic nations.

The defense chief added that he and his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu agreed to seek authorization from their respective presidents and relevant agencies to start negotiations for a visiting forces agreement (VFA).

Lecornu, the first French defense minister to make an official visit to the Philippines, also disclosed that the French navy already had a “high number of operations and training in the region”.

“We are working on an agenda of strengthening our presence in the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

With this latest development, political pundits told Maharlika NuMedia that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s declaration to be “friend of everyone and enemy to none” seems to be working in the country’s favor against foreign aggression.

MANILA — Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa stated on Monday (27 Nov 2023) that the Philippines must undergo a formal process before it can rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This statement came in response to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s mention of the possibility of the country returning to the ICC.

“If you want to rejoin, it will still go through a process,” Dela Rosa remarked.

“After the president’s ratification, it has to be concurred by the Senate with a two-thirds vote. So that’s the process. Back to zero, back to square one,” he added.

The senator underscored that deviating from the established process would be unconstitutional.

Marcos had previously mentioned that the Philippines’ return to the ICC is currently under consideration.

“Should we return under the fold of the ICC? So that is again under study. So we’ll just keep looking at it and see what our options are,” the President stated.

The ICC is currently investigating the war on drugs during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, during which Dela Rosa served as the Philippine National Police chief.

SEVERAL COUNTRIES have expressed “strong support” for the Philippines after China Coast Guard (CCG) used a water cannon on a Philippine vessel in a resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that triggered the 125th diplomatic protest filed under the Marcos Jr. administration.

The varied reaction of the international community was more concerned with China’s “dangerous” actions in the West Philippine Sea, including the use of its coast guard’s water cannon on a Philippine vessel heading to resupply Filipino troops stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal on Friday, November 10.

United States Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson assailed the “continued PRC (People’s Republic of China’s) harassment,” and reiterated that Washington DC would stand by Manila for a “free and open Indo-Pacific.”

“Despite continued PRC harassment, the Philippines successfully and lawfully resupplied its forces on the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal, located wholly within the Philippine EEZ. (The US and the Philippines) stand together as friends, partners, allies for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Carlson noted.

For her part, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines HK Yu also called for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to be respected.

“Australia is again concerned by dangerous conduct, including the use of water cannons, by China’s vessels in the Philippines’ EEZ (exclusive economic zone). Upholding international law, especially UNCLOS is fundamental to international peace and security,” Yu said.

Meanwhile, the envoys of Japan and the United Kingdom in Manila also expressed apprehensions about actions that increase tensions and undermine peace in the area.

“We give high importance to a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law as Japan, and the Philippines discussed during PM (Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s) visit last week. Any harassment and actions which increase tensions are not tolerated,” Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa pointed out.

On the other hand, UK Ambassador Laure Beaufils said: “(The UK) notes unsafe conduct again experienced by Philippine vessels on their resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal. We join the Philippines in calling out actions that undermine peace and stability in the South China Sea.”

“We are committed to UNCLOS, under which the 2016 Arbitral Award is final and legally binding on both parties,” she added.

In addition, the European Union, the Netherlands, and Germany also stressed their support for international law, specifically the UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

German Ambassador to the Philippines Andreas Pfaffernoschke also reposted the Nov. 10 report of the National Task Force – West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) on the latest resupply and rotation mission.

“Given today’s event in the South China Sea, Germany reiterates its support for the Philippines in advocating respect for international law in the South China Sea, as an essential pillar for peace and security,” Pfaffernoschke said.

French Ambassador Mariel Fontanel disclosed that she reaffirmed France’s “continuous support” to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) during her meeting with its commandant, Vice Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, and praised the “eventually successful” resupply mission. (ai/mnm)

STRESSING THAT CHINA must abide by international law, the United States Embassy on Saturday expressed its support for the Philippines following another incident of China’s harassment of the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea.

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros also urged the two “houses” of Congress to immediately pass the proposed higher budget for the agencies safeguarding the country’s security and sovereignty.

“The PRC’s actions are inconsistent with international law and follow a pattern of dangerous operational behavior in the South China Sea,” the US Embassy said in a statement.

On Friday, November 10, the Philippines lodged another diplomatic protest against China after the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) deployed water cannons during a resupply mission at Ayungin Shoal.

“This incident should push Congress to finally approve a higher budget for the intelligence funds for agencies that defend our territories. When our frontliners in the West Philippine Sea become stronger, so will our national security,” Hontiveros said.

The US Embassy also reiterated that the People’s Republic of China had no claim on Ayungin Shoal and must therefore respect all states’ freedom of navigation as guaranteed under international law.

MANILA — Following a recent incident where Chinese vessels collided with Filipino ships engaged in a routine resupply mission to the detachment on the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, the defense leaders of the Philippines and the United States have underscored their dedication to the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between their nations.

In a conference call, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and US Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III addressed the October 22 incident, particularly highlighting the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) perilous and unlawful maneuvers that jeopardized the safety of Philippine vessels and crew.

Secretary Austin also expressed the United States’ unwavering support for the Philippines in the wake of the incident.

The MDT covers both countries’ public vessels, aircraft, and armed forces, including the Coast Guard, throughout the Pacific region, including the South China Sea.

Moreover, the two officials pledged to intensify efforts to enhance bilateral coordination, interoperability, and support for the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Secretary Austin reiterated his firm commitment to the Philippines and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

Teodoro and Austin commended the existing military collaboration between Manila and Washington, including their recent joint naval exercise off the coast of Palawan, and they committed to expanding the scope and pace of US-Philippines engagements.

They also anticipate an in-person meeting in Jakarta during the forthcoming ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Plus.

It may be recalled that on Sunday, October 22, Chinese Coat Guard Chinese maritime militia vessels figured anew in a dangerous blocking incident that led to a collision with a Philippine resupply boat near Ayungin Shoal.

Meanwhile, on Friday the Philippine Fleet (PF) announced that its missile frigates, namely BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) and BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151), alongside a multi-purpose attack craft armed with a Spike-ER (extended range surface-to-surface) missile, successfully engaged in a live-fire gunnery exercise on Thursday.

In an official statement, PF spokesperson Lt. Giovanni Badidles disclosed that these live-fire drills were conducted in the vicinity of Capones Island, San Antonio, Zambales, as part of “Exercise Pagbubuklod,” which is scheduled from October 23 to 27.

Badidles further emphasized that live-fire exercises play a vital role in boosting the confidence of sailors, enhancing their understanding, and refining the precise execution of these formidable capabilities.

He remarked, “The successful execution of these significant training activities substantially aligns with the overarching goals of ‘Exercise Pagbubuklod,’ which is to maximize the utilization of assets and equipment, train personnel, and develop tactics and procedures that ensure operational success.”

According to Badidles, this training initiative also seeks to validate the organizational structure, operational concepts, and published doctrines, all while addressing current and prospective scenarios within the operational areas.

‘Balanced manner’

In another presser Friday, Teodoro said the Philippines intends to maintain its activities in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) to safeguard its sovereignty but “these operations will be carried out in a “balanced manner in anticipation of potential increased challenges from China.”

“We are carefully managing our ‘sovereignty operations’ in light of the possibility of more significant incidents that we wish to avoid. Therefore, we are meticulously planning our actions. However, it is evident that we cannot simply withdraw from our maritime territory, Teodoro said.

When asked about the potential for heightened tensions in the WPS, he stated that they are preparing for various scenarios.

Teodoro also stressed that any activities in the WPS, including upcoming resupply missions, will be executed with great care to prevent escalating tensions or conflicts and to protect the nation’s best interests. He made it clear that these efforts would not be undertaken recklessly to avoid any conflicts.

Furthermore, Teodoro reaffirmed the DND’s unwavering commitment to the country’s sovereignty, as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., stating, “The President’s guidance remains unchanged, and we will remain resolute in upholding our sovereignty.”

THE DAY AFTER the China Coast Guard (CCG) rammed a Philippine resupply boat off Ayungin Shoal within the Philippine exclusive economic zone, Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez lost no time in assailing the “mythical Red Dragon” while Vice President Sara Duterte, who would always portray herself as a patriot, was eerily silent.

And so was his father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte who visited China in July and met with Xi Jinping without even informing his successor President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. as a matter of elementary courtesy.

Oh, before I forget that not-so-secret meeting in China’s capital Beijing was reportedly between “old friends” and the seemingly invincible Chinese leader supposedly asked FPRRD to continue promoting “friendly cooperation” between the two countries.

On the other hand, Romualdez on Monday, October 23, assailed China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea.

He called on China to adhere to maritime laws to ensure the safety of all parties concerned.

“Such actions not only jeopardized the lives of those onboard but also threatened regional peace and stability,” Romualdez stressed.

Again, nary a whimper from the Dutertes.

They seem to be peacefully sleeping inside their air-conditioned rooms.

Yes, I dare say only the hopelessly idiots will believe that their idol is sleeping inside a “moskitero” (mosquito net).

And the universe may forbid that if ever Inday becomes president, maybe we all have to learn China’s national language Mandarin that she fluently delivered in a videotaped message to greet the People’s Republic of China for its 73rd founding anniversary last year.

Now, will we allow our Lupang Hinirang to become China’s province?

TENSIONS FLARED ANEW on Sunday when the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) claimed that Chinese vessels blocked and collided with Philippine boats sending supplies to troops stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre in the West Philippine Sea.

The NTF-WPS reported that the incident happened at around 6:04 a.m. when the “dangerous blocking maneuvers” of China Coast Guard vessel 5203 (CCGV 5203) caused the collision with the AFP-contracted indigenous resupply boat Unaiza May 2 (UM2) approximately 13.5 nautical miles east northeast of the BRP Sierra Madre.

“The provocative, irresponsible, and illegal action of CCGV 5203 imperiled the safety of the crew of UM2,” the NTF-WPS said in a statement.

The UM2 was conducting a regular and routine rotation and resupply (RORE) mission to BRP Sierra Madre which has been deliberately grounded at the Ayungin Shoal since 1999 during the time of then President Joseph “Erap” Estrada and has since become the symbol of Philippine sovereignty.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), US Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson said that the United States “condemns PRC’s latest disruption of a legal Philippine resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal, putting the lives of Filipino service members at risk.”

But China’s coast guard countered that it “lawfully” blocked Philippine vessels that were transporting “illegal construction materials” to BRP Sierra Madre at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. (ai/mnm)

MANILA — The interaction between a shear line impacting Central Luzon and a northeasterly wind pattern affecting Northern Luzon is expected to result in partially cloudy skies with isolated rainfall across most areas of the Philippines, according to the latest report from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) released on Friday (20 Oct 2023).

The shear line is the weather system formed when cold and warm winds converge.

PAGASA’s 4 a.m. weather bulletin indicates that Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, and Kalinga should anticipate overcast conditions with showers due to the influence of the northeasterly wind flow. In the Ilocos region, as well as the rest of the Cordillera region and Cagayan Valley, the prevailing weather will be a mix of partly cloudy to cloudy skies with sporadic light rain.

For Metro Manila and the remainder of the country, the forecast calls for partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, primarily attributed to the shear line and localized thunderstorms, as per PAGASA.

Expect moderate to strong winds with moderate to rough coastal waters in Luzon, while the rest of the country will experience light to moderate winds and slight to moderate sea conditions.

The temperature in Metro Manila will range from 24°C to 29°C; Baguio City, 17°C to 24°C; Laoag City, 25°C to 32°C; Legazpi City, 25°C to 32°C; Metro Cebu, 26°C to 31°C; Puerto Princesa City, 25°C to 32°C; and Metro Davao, 25°C to 33°C.

On October 20, 1944, General Douglas MacArthur as the head of the largest US fleet of transport and warships, accompanied by Commonwealth President Sergio Osmeña and Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, landed on Palo, Leyte to reclaim the Philippines from the Japanese invaders.

Gen. MacArthur made true his famous vow “I shall return” promise following his escape from Corregidor on March 11, 1942, to Australia together with his wife and four-year-old son, and others on orders of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to avoid being overrun by Japanese Forces.

“I shall return” is the last phrase of his statement before reporters:

“The President of the United States ordered me to break through the Japanese lines and proceed from Corregidor to Australia for the purpose, as I understand it, of organizing the American offensive against Japan, a primary objective of which is the relief of the Philippines. I came through and I shall return.”

With his feet finally back on Philippine soil, and his pledge at last being fulfilled, MacArthur spoke with great emotion just moments after he waded ashore:

“I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil — soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples. We have come, dedicated and committed, to the task of destroying every vestige of enemy control over your daily lives, and of restoring, upon a foundation of indestructible, strength, the liberties of your people.”

“At my side is your President, Sergio Osmeña, worthy successor of that great patriot, Manuel Quezon, with members of his cabinet. The seat of your government is now therefore firmly re-established on Philippine soil.”

“The hour of your redemption is here. Your patriots have demonstrated an unswerving and resolute devotion to the principles of freedom that challenge the best that is written on the pages of human history. I now call upon your supreme effort that the enemy may know from the temper of an aroused and outraged people within that he has a force there to contend with no less violent than is the force committed from without.”

“Rally to me. Let the indomitable spirit of Bataan and Corregidor lead on. As the lines of battle roll forward to bring you within the zone of operations, rise and strike. Strike at every favorable opportunity. For your homes and hearths, strike! For future generations of your sons and daughters, strike! In the name of your sacred dead, strike! Let no heart be faint. Let every arm be steeled. The guidance of divine God points the way. Follow in His Name to the Holy Grail of righteous victory!”

Other landings were made in Mindoro, Batangas, and Lingayen in subsequent months.

On February 3, 1945, the bloody Battle of Manila began.

Before this battle, Manila was considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Overlooking a tranquil bay, the so-called “Pearl of the Orient” was home to a unique culture drawn from four continents. No stranger to conflict, the city had been seized by the Spanish in the 16th century, attacked by the Chinese in the 17th, occupied by the British in the 18th, and taken by the Americans at the end of the 19th. But even this tumultuous history could not have prepared the Filipinos for what happened in February to early March of 1945 when Manila was utterly destroyed.

Amphibious landings and air attacks were made in various parts of the Philippines that were still in Japanese hands. MacArthur, who had taken over the government as Military Administrator, turned over the reins of the civil government to President Sergio Osmeña.

On July 4, 1945, he proclaimed the liberation of the entire Philippines from Japanese invasion.

Accordingly, MacArthur proposed that war be brought right at Japan’s door — bombing occurred day and night in mainland Japan, important Japanese ports and cities like Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kure as well as the deadly atomic bomb unleashed in Hiroshima, killing thousands of inhabitants.

On September 2, 1945, Japan unconditionally signed the terms of surrender on board the battleship Missouri at Tokyo Bay. Hence, MacArthur, one of the best-known American military leaders of World War II led occupation forces in the reconstruction of Japan.

MANILA – On Sunday, the Philippine government vehemently condemned the escalating violence in Israel and assured the public that it is in close coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv to ensure the safety of Filipino nationals.

“The Philippines strongly condemns the recent attacks, particularly those targeting civilian populations,” stated the Office of the President. This statement came in response to the sudden assaults launched by the Hamas group against Israelis on Saturday and the subsequent retaliatory actions taken by Israeli forces.

The official statement expressed heartfelt sympathies and condolences to those who have lost family members and loved ones in these recent attacks. Furthermore, it emphasized that the Philippines recognizes the right of states to self-defense in the face of external aggression, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

In a separate announcement, the Presidential Communications Office disclosed that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. had instructed the government to maintain close coordination with the embassy in Tel Aviv and the Migrant Workers Office in Israel, with the primary aim of assisting Filipinos affected by the ongoing conflict.

Both offices have been tasked with promptly locating and accounting for all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families residing in Israel. To facilitate communication, the Department of Migrant Workers has established a hotline along with Viber and WhatsApp numbers, which will accept calls and inquiries from OFWs and the Filipino community seeking government assistance.

Call for International Support

Meanwhile, the Israeli Embassy in Manila called upon allied nations to extend their support to Israel and unequivocally condemn the acts of violence.

“In this moment of distress, we urge our friends and allies to stand firmly with Israel and denounce these acts of terror committed by Hamas. We expect the international community and our close allies to condemn terrorism and uphold Israel’s right to defend its citizens,” declared Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss during a virtual briefing.

Fluss revealed that the extensive acts of terror have resulted in more than 250 Israeli casualties, with over 1,600 individuals injured and more than 100 Israelis taken as hostages in Gaza.

“Hamas continues to launch rocket attacks into Israel. This terrorist organization has infiltrated our cities and residential areas, deliberately targeting innocent Israeli citizens, including the elderly, women, and children,” he pointed out.

Fluss clarified that while there have been reports of foreign nationals being held hostage, it remains uncertain if Filipinos are among them.

“Israel remains under attack. Terrorists are still active in the southern part of Israel, and the Israeli Defense Forces are engaged in ongoing efforts to regain full control of the situation,” he noted.

“I have heard reports about Philippine nationals, but at this stage, we do not have any confirmation regarding their involvement. The situation is still evolving, and we are in the process of gathering information,” he explained.

Fluss underscored that the Israeli Defense Forces are compelled to respond to the attacks by initiating a large-scale operation. He emphasized that Israel has the inherent right to protect itself, and it is the government’s duty to ensure the safety of its citizens and foreign residents living in the country.

“We deeply appreciate the messages of support and solidarity that Israel is receiving from our Filipino friends. As we navigate these challenging times, a clear message resounds: Stand with Israel, condemn Hamas’ attacks, and reject terrorism unequivocally,” Fluss concluded.

THE PHILIPPINES’ LONGTIME ALLY and the world’s prime superpower United States of America has commended the brave act of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in removing the floating barrier in Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.

The floating barrier was installed last week by the China Coast Guard and prevented Filipino fishermen from operating in the international common fishing ground.

Describing the removal of the floating barrier installed by CCG as “a bold step in defending their own sovereignty” on the part of the Philippines, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia Lindsey Ford also reaffirmed Washington’s security commitments to its Asian ally during a congressional hearing on Thursday (Friday in the Philippines).

“The department has been incredibly clear that when it comes to our treaty commitments to the Philippines, we believe an armed attack against the Philippine Armed Forces, public vessels, and aircraft, apply to the South China Sea. That includes the Philippine Coast Guard,” Ford told a House of Representatives subcommittee on foreign affairs.

On Monday, September 25, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) removed the floating barrier put up by the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) following the order of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and National Security Adviser (NSA) Eduardo Año.

Notably, even retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio who once led the “anti-Marcos” 1Sambayan opposition coalition in 2022 is now supporting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s move to strengthen the country’s alliances with other states amid China’s moves in the West Philippine Sea.

The Scarborough Shoal, locally known as Bajo de Masinloc, is 198 kilometers west of Subic Bay in Zambales province, thus part of the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), although China claims it otherwise.

“The 2016 Arbitral Award has affirmed that BDM is the traditional fishing ground of Filipino fishermen. Thus, any obstruction hindering the livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk in the shoal violates international law. It also infringes on the Philippines’ sovereignty over BDM,” PCG Commodore Jay Tarriela earlier maintained.

Unfortunately, China refuses to honor the 2016 Arbitral Ruling up to this very day and has been making efforts to block supply ships from the Philippine Navy right inside territorial waters in the WPS several times recently.
