CARLOS YULO (center) with (from left) Kiyomi Watanabe, Vanessa Sarno, John Febuar Ceniza, Aira Villegas, Christian Martin Gonzalez, Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Nesthy Petecio, Joanie Delgaco, Eumir Felix Marcial and Carlo Paalam.

CARLOS Yulo received another P10 million windfall this time from the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) for the vault and floor exercise gold medals the gymnast won in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

On hand to present Yulo his bonus was Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and Christian Martin Gonzalez, who represented ICTSI chairman and CEO Enrique K. Razon in a simple ceremony at the Waterside at Solaire in Pasay City.

“Thank you to the ICTSI, Sir Ricky [Razon],” said Yulo, who arrived from Paris on Thursday. “Thank you to POC president, Mayor Abraham Tolentino, and we are all hoping they will continue supporting us up to the next Olympics and overseas competitions.”

It wasn’t only Yulo who was rewarded by the ICTSI and its chairman and CEO Enrique Razon, but also bronze medalists boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio with P2 million each and the non-medalists in the 22-athlete Team Philippines who received P200,000 each in bonuses.

“Let us thank the ICTSI, Mr. Enrique Razon and Christian Gonzalez, for helping our athletes with these cash rewards,” said Tolentino, who initiated the ICTSI’s reward for the Paris Olympians. “Our national athletes have performed their very best in the greatest show on earth at the Paris Olympics.”

Gonzalez, ICTSI executive vice president, emphasized how the athletes and sports are important to the country.

“It’s very important for us supporting our athletes, it’s very important for our country,” Gonzalez said. “It is something we wanted to do more because of all the hard work that you put in for the last eight or 12 years or your entire life.”

Yulo has already received at least P90 million in cash bonuses for his historic feat in Paris.

“Just like the other incentives that I received from the others, it is really super overwhelming, and it is really unexpected to receive another cash reward after they recognized our accomplishments, hard work in practices, and sacrifices for the longest time,” Yulo added.

THE commitment has transformed into a tradition as the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) gifts Paris 2024 Olympics double gold medalist gymnast Carlos Yulo not one but two houses-and-lots while bronze medalist boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas will soon walk into their brand new bungalows in Tagaytay City.

“It’s now a tradition, first Hidilyn Diaz [Naranjo] deserved all the best for giving the country its first Olympic gold medal and now, it’s the turn of Caloy [Yulo], Nesthy and Aira to be feted with the same reward for their historic efforts,” Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said on Tuesday.

For Yulo, his two two-storey homes would sit on a 500-square meter lot appraised at around P15 million, according to POC secretary-general Atty. Wharton Chan.

These new homes will also be highlighted with gazebos, Tolentino said.

For Petecio, it would be her second home in Tagaytay City after the first one she received for her silver from Tokyo 2020—she’s neighbor to fellow silver medalist Carlos Paalam and bronze medalist Eumir Felix Marcial in a compound aptly called Olympic Village in the city also courtesy of Tolentino and the POC.

Petecio and Villegas’s bungalows will rise on separate 200-square meter lots and just like Yulo’s, will be furnished with basic amenities, according to Tolentino.

“All the rewards and bonuses that go our medalists’ way are well-deserved, it’s not easy to medal in the Olympics, it takes years, it takes focus, discipline and determination,” Tolentino said.

“These athletes invested their lives into the sports they love and now, they’re reaping the fruits of their sacrifices,” he added.

Tolentino withheld announcing the locations of the homes but would be turning over the keys to the medalist Olympians in a ceremony fit for champions.

“The POC doesn’t think twice about these rewards, an Olympic medal, regardless of color, is the most precious medal in sports,” said Tolentino as he thanked the POC Board for showing full gratitude to the efforts of Yulo, Petecio and Villegas.

Manila – Gymnast Carlos Yulo, the Philippines’ first double-gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will enjoy tax-free rewards for his historic achievements. Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. announced this exemption on August 26.

Lumagui clarified that Yulo’s Olympic accolades, which include cash prizes, gifts, and donations, will be free from income tax. This aligns with the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), recently amended to benefit athletes.

“The BIR extends its heartfelt congratulations to Carlos Yulo for his extraordinary performance,” said Lumagui. “His achievements inspire us all.”

Under Section 32(B)(7)(d) of the NIRC, athletes’ prizes and awards for both local and international performances are exempt from income tax. This exemption covers prizes from the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee and the Philippine government, by Republic Act No. 10699, the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.”

Furthermore, gifts, bequests, and donations received by Yulo are also tax-exempt under Section 32(B)(3) of the NIRC. These will not be included in his gross income, and he is not required to pay taxes on them. Section 98 of the NIRC also exempts recipients from donor’s tax for any gifts received.

On August 21, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 10723, which aims to exempt Filipino athletes and their coaches from taxes on incentives and rewards for international sporting achievements.

Yulo received PHP 20 million from the Philippine Sports Commission under Republic Act 10699, with PHP 10 million designated for each Olympic gold medal. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. matched this with an additional PHP 20 million—PHP 10 million for each medal.

Other rewards include PHP 4 million each from the Office of the President and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) for bronze medalists, PHP 2 million for other Paris Olympians, and various private incentives such as a PHP 35 million condominium from Megaworld Corp., PHP 10 million from MVP Sports Foundation, PHP 5 million from ArenaPlus, PHP 14 million from House members, and two vehicles—a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and a Cherry Tiggo 7 Pro SUV.

MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced on Wednesday (August 7, 2024) that he plans to seek advice from double gold medalist Carlos Yulo on how the government can better support and increase the number of sports medalists in the country.

“That is, I think, a more significant effort, and that’s why I will ask Caloy Yulo what he believes the government can do to help us produce more medalists,” Marcos said.

“I believe he will continue to reach greater heights in sports since he has been a world champion for a long time. He should have won at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but he was a bit short. Now, we’ve seen his true capabilities. I think he will be the best person to consult on what additional measures we can take,” the Chief Executive added.

Yulo won two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, topping the men’s gymnastics floor exercise and vault.

When asked if the Office of the President would provide a separate reward for Yulo, Marcos confirmed this would be considered.

“Since he has already received monetary rewards from various sources, what we will do is ask him directly how else the government can help increase the number of our Olympic medalists,” the President said.
