MANILA — The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) reported a 40 percent decrease in recorded cases of online scams in January compared to the same period last year.

ACG Director Police Brig. Gen. Sydney Sultan Hernia stated that there were 624 cases in January 2024, compared to 1,045 in January 2023.

Hernia attributed this decline to intensified cyber patrolling by the ACG. He emphasized that the ACG has been expanding its presence throughout the country by establishing new offices in different regions, provinces, and districts, along with deploying cybercrime desks in every police station. Additionally, he mentioned that they are enhancing the police’s capability against cybercrime through continuous training.

Hernia urged the public to continue cooperating with the police by actively reporting incidents of cybercrime to facilitate immediate action. He also advised vigilance in online activities.

“It is imperative that we continually educate ourselves to safeguard against falling victim to online scams,” he added.
