TAGBILARAN City, Bohol — Tagbilaran Mayor Jane Yap has made a significant environmental decision by withdrawing the city council’s acceptance of a private firm’s unsolicited proposal for a 153-hectare reclamation project.

The project, proposed by the Tagbilaran Waterfront Development Corporation (TWDC), faced strong opposition from environmentalists and residents concerned about its potential threat to marine biodiversity.

Mayor Yap, known for her consultative and participative leadership style, emphasized the importance of considering the voices of the people and protecting natural resources.

Mayor Jane Cajes-Yap also served before as National Youth Commission chairwoman.

Despite the economic benefits the city stood to gain, including a substantial increase in real property tax and the creation of thousands of jobs, Yap prioritized environmental impact.

The proposed project called the “Tagbilaran City Waterfront Development,” aimed to cover the narrow strait between Panglao Island and Tagbilaran, raising concerns about irreversible damage to Tagbilaran Bay.

Environmental advocates, including Tagbilaran Baywatch, applauded the decision but remained vigilant, urging the city council to formally reject TWDC’s proposal and revoke all prior resolutions supporting the project.

Tagbilaran Bishop Alberto Uy expressed deep appreciation for Mayor Yap’s decision, citing her leadership as a shining example for those dedicated to serving communities with integrity and empathy.

The victory reflects a collaborative effort between the local government and concerned citizens to prioritize environmental conservation over short-term economic gains.
