MANILA — The return of expelled Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. from Timor-Leste may face delays, according to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The NBI Director, Medardo de Lemos, leading a Philippine team to Timor-Leste to execute Interpol’s red notice against Teves, stated that the Timorese court is currently reviewing the Philippines’ and Interpol’s request for his custody.

“They have a procedural system in Timor-Leste, and they are currently assessing our request,” de Lemos explained.

A red notice, issued by Interpol, serves as a global law enforcement call to locate and apprehend an individual pending extradition, surrender, or other legal actions.

De Lemos mentioned that they were informed the court proceedings could extend between seven to 40 days.

“Timor-Leste adheres to its legal procedures, and we respect the protocols of all countries where the Philippines is involved,” de Lemos affirmed.
