MANILA — A delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has initiated the assessment of the Philippines’ adherence to maritime education, training, and certification standards outlined in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

According to a statement released on Tuesday (30 April 2024) by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the evaluation, which commenced on April 29 and is scheduled to conclude on May 3, is in line with the execution of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by both nations aimed at mutual recognition of seafarer certificates.

“Through this MOU, both parties are committed to ensuring the caliber and competence of seafarers through the reciprocal acknowledgment of their certifications,” MARINA emphasized.

During the inaugural meeting held on Monday, Samuel Batalla, Executive Director of the STCW Office, highlighted the significance of the visit as an opportunity for MARINA to showcase its dedication to upholding global maritime standards.

“As a primary contributor of seafarers on the international stage, it is our responsibility to guarantee that our maritime workforce is well-prepared and compliant with international mandates,” Batalla remarked.
