MANILA — The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) announced on Monday (25 March 2024) that the body of a three-year-old golden retriever, Killua, has tested positive for rabies.

PAWS issued a statement urging individuals who may have been scratched or bitten by the dog to promptly seek post-exposure shots.

This includes pet owner Vina Arazas, who embraced the bloodied body of her beloved dog when she discovered him in a known dog slaughter area in Sta Cruz, Bato, Camarines Sur, according to PAWS.

“While the accuracy of the test results may be compromised due to the body having been buried for five days before testing and potential contamination from the environment where many stray dogs have been slaughtered, PAWS is making this announcement to ensure that any bites or scratches are promptly reported in the interest of public health and safety,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, PAWS intends to file criminal charges against Anthony Solares for violating the Anti-Rabies Act or RA 9482 by participating in the dog meat trade.

PAWS alleged that Solares was selling dog meat in his eatery.

PAWS has also urged anyone who may have consumed dogs from the area where Killua’s body was discovered to seek post-exposure shots.

“They are at great risk. Dog meat traders are not only cruel individuals but also pose a serious threat to public health.”
