MANILA — Filipino marathoner Arlan Abois Jr. is gearing up to take on the challenge of the 2024 Tokyo Marathon on March 3, despite not being considered a top contender.

Excited for his debut in this prestigious event, Abois eagerly anticipates competing alongside some of the world’s best runners, including two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya.

“I’m thrilled because this will be my first time participating in the Tokyo Marathon. It has always been a dream of mine to join this event, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of my idol, Eliud Kipchoge,” Abois shared in a recent interview with a group of Filipino runners in Europe.

The 27-year-old athlete from Tupi, South Cotabato, surprised many by clinching a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia last May.

Abois attributes much of his remarkable improvement to his coach, two-time Olympian and national record holder Eduardo Buenavista, who has been instrumental in his training.

“Firstly, I want to express my gratitude to Asics PH for sponsoring me and providing me with the opportunity to compete in the Tokyo Marathon, and especially to my legendary coach Eduardo Buenavista for his significant role in my improvement,” Abois remarked.

Before the Tokyo Marathon, Abois demonstrated his form by securing a third-place finish in the 21-kilometer 7-Eleven Run 2024 held in Cagayan de Oro City on Feb. 4.

He also appreciated the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the Philippine Sports Commission’s unwavering support.
