MANILA — On December 2, 1899, a pivotal moment unfolded in Filipino history as the Battle of Tirad Pass took place.

The clash saw 60 Filipino soldiers, led by General Gregorio del Pilar, facing off against over 300 American soldiers under the command of General Peyton C. March.

Tasked by General Emilio Aguinaldo, Del Pilar’s mission was to obstruct the American forces’ advance into Tirad Pass, a crucial mountain gap nestled in the Cordillera Mountains of Northern Luzon.

The goal was clear: defend the pass to halt the American incursion, enabling Aguinaldo to establish a guerrilla force in Isabela beyond the Cordilleras.

Positioning his men strategically atop the mountain, Del Pilar and his forces witnessed the relentless advance of a battalion of 300 American soldiers. This tactical move allowed Aguinaldo and his troops to safely retreat to the north.

Encouraging his men in the face of the impending conflict, Del Pilar declared, “This is the most glorious moment in our lives. We are fighting for our motherland.”

As the firefight ensued, a moment of eerie silence fell upon the valley after both sides ceased firing. Unbeknownst to Del Pilar and his troops, a Filipino guide was leading a contingent of American soldiers to their rear. Suddenly, gunfire erupted from behind, causing the Filipino forces to suffer losses.

Facing the adversary alone, Del Pilar, undeterred, retrieved his diary from his breast pocket and wrote, “What I am doing now is for my beloved land.” Despite mounting his horse once more with saber in hand, a single shot claimed the life of the valiant general.

American soldiers quickly converged on the fallen general, seizing various items as mementos. Yet, one thing remained untouched – Del Pilar’s unwavering love for his country, a sentiment that not even death could extinguish.

Recognizing Del Pilar’s heroism, American Lieutenant Dennis P. Quinlan ordered the burial of his remains with military honors. The grave was marked with a poignant inscription: “GENERAL GREGORIO DEL PILAR, KILLED AT THE BATTLE OF TIRAD PASS, DECEMBER 2, 1899, COMMANDING AGUINALDO’S REAR GUARD, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN.”

This poignant chapter in Filipino history serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit and sacrifice displayed by General Del Pilar in defense of his homeland.
