MANILA — The Provincial Police Office of La Union disclosed a concerning surge in vehicular traffic incidents (VTIs) within the province during the “Byaheng Kalusugan: Road Safety Month 2024” coordination meeting led by the Department of Health – Ilocos Region on Friday (01 Mar 2024) in San Fernando City, La Union.

Data presented by PNP La Union revealed a total of 872 VTIs, resulting in 88 fatalities, recorded from January to December 2023, compared to 511 cases reported in 2022, which resulted in 77 deaths.

Deputy Provincial Director for Operations, Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnold S. Ongachen, stated that the primary causes of VTIs are overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and collisions due to either running over or avoiding potholes, resulting in loss of control, miscalculations, distracted driving, and lack of knowledge on traffic rules and regulations.

“For our part in the PNP, we have intensified our efforts to reduce VTIs through the deployment of checkpoints in major areas of the province. We have also increased personnel deployment to effectively mitigate VTIs.”

“Seeing police officers and checkpoints along the road reduces accidents because many of those involved in accidents, especially motorcyclists, do not have licenses, and their vehicles are not registered,” Ongachen explained.

The “Byaheng Kalusugan: Road Safety Month” 2024 celebration aims to raise awareness among motorists, commuters, and pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility, and that road accidents and deaths can be prevented through collaborative efforts.

DOH Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco reiterated her call for motorists to exercise caution when driving. “Practice safe and defensive driving on the road. Avoid overspeeding, stay alert, and refrain from road rage.”

“Being responsible while driving is key to preventing any accidents,” she emphasized.

Representatives from the LTO, DPWH, ITRMC, PHO La Union, PDRRMO, PNP Regional Office 1, PNP La Union, PIA La Union, PDOHO La Union, DOH1-HEMS, San Juan LGU, and members of the Cyclist and Bikers Association of La Union attended to provide meaningful inputs for the finalization of the program of events.
