MANILA — At approximately 1:04 pm, Ilocos Norte experienced a seismic event as a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the region, sending tremors through the area, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) identified the epicenter of the quake in Pagudpud town.
In response to the seismic activity, people swiftly evacuated buildings, as captured in a photo provided by Phivolcs. The incident prompted heightened awareness and precautionary measures among residents.
The earthquake’s epicenter was pinpointed some 16 kilometers northwest of Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte, with Phivolcs categorizing it as tectonic in origin and occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers. Reports indicated that areas such as Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, experienced Intensity 6 shaking, while Sinait, Ilocos Sur, felt Intensity 4.
While aftershocks were anticipated, no significant damage had been reported at the time of the event. Nonetheless, authorities advised continued vigilance and readiness in affected areas to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
