ISTANBUL — Renowned Hollywood actress and humanitarian, Angelina Jolie, has taken a stand against global injustice, decrying the unequal pursuit of justice for different groups, even within the United Nations.

In a recent conversation with Syrian journalist and filmmaker Waad Al Kateab, Jolie expressed her concern about the uneven distribution of human rights worldwide, emphasizing that rights are sometimes granted to specific groups while being denied to others.

Jolie, a former UN goodwill ambassador and special envoy until last year, lamented the prevailing influence of “business interests” in shaping global affairs, describing it as an “ugly state” of affairs. Witnessing war crimes firsthand, she found it disheartening and upsetting that promises and declarations made by governments and decision-makers often resulted in no tangible change.

Highlighting the persistence of control and abuse in developing countries, Jolie challenged the notion that colonialism had ended, asserting that these issues are perhaps worse than ever. She pointed out that business interests even influence the United Nations, which holds the final veto power.

Last month, Jolie condemned Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza, urging action against the collective punishment of Palestinian civilians. Sharing images of the damage in Gaza, she criticized the deliberate bombing of a trapped population and highlighted the dire humanitarian situation. By refusing to demand a humanitarian cease-fire and blocking the UN Security Council from imposing one on both parties, Jolie argued that world leaders are complicit in these crimes.
