MANILA — Describing the country’s northernmost province as “the spearhead of the Philippines,” Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has called for increased military presence in Batanes.

On Tuesday (February 6), Teodoro Jr. and Armed Forces chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., together with Northern Luzon Command head Lt. Gen. Fernyl Buca and Philippine Navy flag officer-in-command Toribio Adaci Jr., inspected critical facilities in the northernmost province.

“The visit by Secretary Teodoro signifies a pivotal moment in our nation’s commitment to territorial defense and national security,” the Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) noted in a statement.

After assessing the situation, the DND chief said he wants more structures in the province after inspecting Naval Detachment Basco, Naval Detachment Mavulis, Itbayat Airport, and the Multi-Agency Facility in Mahatao.

After the Batanes visit, the defense and military officials also visited the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) in Santa Ana, Cagayan.

“The importance of securing borders and establishing a robust presence in strategic areas was also highlighted through a marker unveiling and insightful briefing conducted at the Naval Detachment Mavulis, symbolizing the unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation’s borders and ensuring the safety of the people,” the NFNL added.
