Climate activists staged a mass action at the Ninoy Aquino Monument along Ayala Avenue in Makati City Tuesday (24 Oct 2023) as they voiced their opposition to the Marcos administration’s endorsement of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Aboitiz Power Corporation (Aboitiz Power) — the power-related investment holding company of the Aboitiz Group — and Jera Company Incorporated (JERA), Japan’s largest power generation company.
Aboitiz Power Corp. and Jera collaboratively assessed the potential of cleaner fuels for power generation, but this, the climate activists claimed redounds into opening of more fossil fuels or liquified natural gas in the country that are accordingly hazardous to health.
The MOU was officially signed by Aboitiz Power Chairman Sabin Aboitiz and JERA President Satoshi Onoda, in the presence of President Bongbong Marcos Jr. and key officials from the Philippine government.
During their protest rally in Makati City, climate activists displayed large banners to convey their message.
