MANILA – Attempted homicide charges have been filed against NorthPort Batang Pier guard John Walker Amores in the Lumban, Laguna court, stemming from a shootout allegedly related to a bet in a barangay basketball game.
The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rookie posted bail of PHP 24,000, while his brother, Red Amores, secured his release with a PHP 10,000 bail.
The charges were detailed in a document signed by Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Maria Cayaba on September 26, which was obtained by the media on Friday.
Reports indicate that the Amores brothers surrendered to authorities after security footage revealed them firing a handgun at Lee Cacalda along the Manila East Road following a game in Lumban, Laguna province. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, which police say arose from an argument over a PHP 4,000 bet in a pickup game.
In 2022, Amores was banned while a collegiate player after a physical altercation involving four players from an opposing team.

LUMBAN, Laguna – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) expressed deep concern over NorthPort guard John Amores’ recent gun incident.
In a statement issued before the quarterfinal games at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial described the event, where Amores allegedly fired shots at Lee Cacalda, as unfortunate. He emphasized the need to respect the police investigation before commenting further. “This is a matter subject to investigation by the police, and we cannot comment on it. But we are saddened by such an unfortunate incident,” Marcial stated.
Local police, led by Major Bob Ordiz, confirmed they will rely on evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements, to resolve the case. Reports indicate that Amores and Cacalda had a confrontation over a foul call during a pick-up game with a PHP 4,000 wager, which escalated into the shooting.
Amores and his brother surrendered to authorities early Thursday due to threats from Cacalda’s associates. The brothers then underwent preliminary inquiries and a paraffin test at the Laguna PNP headquarters. They face charges of attempted murder, which could result in a prison sentence of six to twelve years if convicted. The police are currently assessing the bail amount, which is expected to range from PHP 24,000 to PHP 200,000.
