MANILA – The Philippines rugby teams made history over the weekend by securing both the men’s and women’s titles at the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy, held at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The men’s team, led by coach Darryl Suasua, showcased their impressive teamwork to overpower Chinese Taipei with a 27-12 victory in the finals. The women’s squad, under coach Samantha Scott, followed suit with a hard-fought win, narrowly defeating India 7-5.
“We are immensely proud of both our women’s and men’s teams for their performances and dedication,” said Ada Milby, president of the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU). “Winning double gold is a historic achievement for Philippine Rugby and reflects the hard work of the athletes, coaches, and support staff.”
The men’s team roster included co-captains Kai Ledesma Stroem and Harrison Carceller Blake, Dayton Iobu, Donald Canon Coleman, George Rosal Nield, Jake Soriano, Jonel Madrona, Michael Gomez Blatties, Ned Plarizan Stephenson, Rafael Julian Phillips, Reed Santos, Tristan Quirante Leffers, physiotherapist Declan Drake, and team manager Lalaine Bacus.
The women’s team featured captain Rassiel Sales, vice-captain Pearl Opolentisima Kellie, Alana Lee Donaire Grace, Janin Lara Puig, Naomi Kate Palis Stroem, Kayleigh Corpuz Foster, Lauryn Nazareno, Loramhel Mateo, Patricia Mandon Mangahas, Sylvia Tudoc, Takiah-Lani Joy Buchanan, Vanessa Hachiles Cifuentes, physiotherapist Harry Fardell, and team manager Mark Villamora.
Following these victories, both teams will return to compete in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series next year, marking a bright future for Philippine Rugby.
