MANILA — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that the death toll from Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name Trami) and Super Typhoon Leon (international name Kong-rey) has climbed to 139.

So far, only 14 deaths have been validated: nine in Bicol, two in Central Luzon, two in the Cordillera region, and one in Northern Mindanao. An additional 125 deaths are still undergoing validation, with 72 in Calabarzon, 46 in Bicol, five in Central Visayas, and two in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Reports of 21 missing persons are also pending confirmation, with 15 in Calabarzon, four in Bicol, one in Ilocos, and one in Central Visayas. Among the 86 reported injuries, only 10 have been verified.

The cyclones have affected approximately 1,788,630 families, or 7,033,922 individuals, across 10,948 barangays in 17 regions nationwide. Currently, 86,565 families (333,951 people) are sheltered in 2,780 evacuation centers, while another 91,307 families (427,059 individuals) are receiving assistance outside of these centers.

Additionally, around 111,117 houses have been reported damaged in 16 regions, with agricultural damage estimated at PHP 2.83 billion and infrastructure damage at PHP 3.61 billion.

MANILA — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday (28 Oct 2024) reported a tragic toll of 116 lives lost due to the intense onslaught of severe tropical storm ‘Kristine.’

In addition to the fatalities, 39 people remain missing, and 109 individuals sustained injuries as a result of the storm’s impact. The disaster has touched the lives of 6.7 million people—or approximately 1.6 million families—across 10,147 barangays nationwide, leaving a widespread mark of devastation.

The storm’s severe weather also inflicted an estimated P2.5 billion in agricultural losses and P1.5 billion in damages to infrastructure. According to the NDRRMC, approximately 3,004 homes were completely destroyed, while another 41,533 sustained partial damage.

Currently, a total of 160 cities and municipalities have been declared under a state of calamity to expedite relief and recovery efforts.

The full extent of ‘Kristine’s’ impact is still unfolding, as the nation rallies to support affected communities and rebuild the affected areas.
