MANILA – Lyceum of the Philippines University showcased a commanding performance against Colegio de San Juan de Letran, securing a 91-68 victory to bolster their Final Four campaign in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Arena on Friday, October 11.
Renz Villegas led the Pirates with 23 points, including three three-pointers, alongside five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. John Barba contributed significantly with 11 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, as LPU improved to a 5-5 record. Gyle Montano also made an impact with 16 points, including four triples, avenging their previous 66-78 loss to Letran on October 5.
Barba reflected on the team’s preparation after their earlier loss, stating, “After we lost in the first round, we had a three-day team building at LPU Cavite. We prepared there. We had a bad start. This is our opportunity to recover, and it’s a good thing everyone responded.”
The Pirates welcomed back two injured players, with John Bravo scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Michael Versoza added seven points and four rebounds. Mcclaude Guadana is expected to return for their next game against defending champions San Beda University.
Vince Cuajao led Letran with 16 points, including three triples, but the Knights slipped to third place with a 6-4 record. Sherick Estrada contributed 11 points, while Paolo Javillonar added 10.
Despite taking an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Letran ended the period tied at 21. Kevin Santos, who scored 17 points in the first round, managed only eight points but recorded 10 rebounds, four blocks, two assists, and two steals.
