MANILA — Mercy Sunot, the lead vocalist of the popular OPM rock band Aegis, has passed away at 48 after a courageous battle with breast and lung cancer.
Aegis confirmed her death through a heartfelt message posted on their official Facebook page, where they expressed their gratitude for her contributions to the band.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mercy, one of the beloved vocalists of Aegis Band. She bravely fought her battle with cancer but has now found peace,” the band wrote.
“Mercy’s voice was more than just a part of Aegis—it brought comfort, joy, and strength to so many. Her passion and unforgettable presence on stage will forever be cherished in our hearts.”
The band asked fans to honor Mercy’s legacy, saying, “Let us come together to celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind. Mercy, thank you for the music, the love, and the memories. You will be deeply missed.”
Tributes quickly poured in from fans and friends alike. Former actress Bunny Paras shared a touching tribute on social media, describing Mercy as “beautiful, full of life, with a wonderful voice and warm personality.” She extended her condolences, saying, “Mercy, you were so full of life… my deepest condolences and prayers.”
Just days before her passing, Sunot had appealed to fans to pray for her after undergoing critical lung surgery, a sign of her strength and determination throughout her illness.
Aegis, best known for their iconic hits like “Halik,” “Sayang na Sayang,” and “Luha,” rose to fame in the 1990s. The band also had a successful run with their music featured in the popular musical Rak of Aegis. Sunot, along with her siblings Juliet and Ken, was a key member of the band, which also included Stella Pabico, Rey Abenoja, Rowena Adriano, and Vilma Goloviogo.
Mercy Sunot’s voice and legacy will live on in the hearts of her fans and the OPM community.
