MANILA — Following the election of 78-year-old Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States of America and the reported possibility of mass deportation of some 300,000 undocumented Filipinos, OFW party-list Representative Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino has expressed deep concern and urged the Philippine government to proactively address the issue.

The lawmaker representing the OFWs pointed out Friday (15 Nov 2024) that the potential uprooting of US-based Filipinos from their homes, work, and communities poses significant challenges, both emotionally and economically.

“In anticipation of this, we strongly urge the Philippine government to proactively address the effects of this possible mass deportation. It is essential that comprehensive social safety nets, reintegration programs, and mechanisms for job retooling, re-skilling, and employment facilitation be put in place. These programs must ensure that the opportunities available to returning Filipinos are at least comparable to the jobs they may be forced to leave behind in the United States,” Magsino said in a statement on Friday (15 November 2024).

She also called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to take steps to ensure that due process is fully observed for Filipinos facing deportation.

“This includes access to hearings and the right to appeal, ensuring that their voices are heard and that they are given a fair opportunity to present their case. We strongly believe that the United States is a nation that values fairness and justice, and that these principles will be upheld as they impose stricter immigration policies possibly leading to deportation process,” Magsino stressed.

Whether or not these fears materialize, Magsino said the OFW party-list stands in solidarity with our kababayans in the U.S. as they navigate the uncertainty brought about by stricter immigration policies.

“We remain committed to advocating for their rights and well-being, both here and abroad,” Magsino concluded.
