MANILA — The National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) celebrated its 72nd anniversary on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, with the theme, “Powering Through at 72.” Held at the NPC Building in Intramuros, Manila, the event brought together government officials, media stakeholders, and regional press clubs.
The celebration began with a holy mass at 4 p.m., followed by a “Fellowship Night” attended by various media organizations from Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Among the distinguished guests were Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez and Raymond Burgos, Special Assistant to DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, who is also a lifetime NPC member. Other notable attendees included officers and members of regional press groups like the Camanava Press Club, Manila City Hall Press Club, and PaMaMariSan-Rizal Press Corps.
In his opening remarks, NPC President Leonel “Boying” Abasola welcomed attendees and acknowledged key figures such as Secretary Chavez, Special Assistant Burgos, and members of various press associations. Chavez, a veteran journalist himself, recalled working alongside NPC Director Aya Yupangco and Estong Reyes in the 1980s, reflecting on his enduring connection with the NPC.
Highlighting the event, Chavez emphasized the NPC’s resilience, saying, “Politicians come and go. Regimes come and go, but the NPC remains and is powering on at 72.” He also commended the NPC’s dedication to promoting journalism through scholarships for deserving students and recognized the organization’s impact over the years.
Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) Chief Dr. Persida V. Rueda-Acosta delivered an inspirational message, reinforcing PAO’s commitment to providing free legal assistance to media members facing charges in the line of duty. She lauded the NPC’s unwavering strength, noting, “People come and go, pero ang NPC ay nananatiling matatag.” Acosta, fresh from a jail visit, attended the event to show her support, underscoring her dedication to justice for media professionals.
The NPC presented Dr. Emilio C. Yap III and his family with a plaque of appreciation for funding the renovation of the NPC Medical Clinic, which is expected to be completed by April 2025. Additional messages of support from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Manila City Government underscored the significance of NPC’s role in advocating for journalistic freedom and integrity.
With 72 years of service to the nation, the NPC stands firm as a pillar of Philippine journalism, supporting media practitioners and advancing press freedom.
