MANILA — Senator Nancy Binay has called upon local government units to enhance tourism by improving the quality of street food and showcasing local flavors to tourists.
Binay emphasized the importance of supporting small vendors who sell street food, noting their crucial role in the country’s economy.
“Undoubtedly, the street food culture holds untapped tourism potential. We should extend our support to these small-scale vendors as they form an integral part of the local economy. LGUs can assist by identifying vending and no-vending zones to regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic—especially now that street food adventures are thriving,” the senator remarked.
She proposed that LGUs can contribute to tourism by assisting food hawkers with training, sanitation and safety practices, food preparation, handling, and serving, thereby enhancing the overall street food experience.
“Isn’t it true that in Taipei, Bangkok, Singapore, Da Lat (Vietnam), KL’s Bukit Bintang and Jalan Alor, Seoul, Hong Kong, and other Asian countries, these destinations attract visitors because of their renowned street food? We just need to refine and elevate such food markets and actively promote them as culinary destinations,” Binay expressed.
“We have a plethora of local flavors that are worth showcasing to the world,” she emphasized.
The senator referenced research indicating that positive street food experiences significantly influence tourists’ perceptions of a destination, leading to heightened satisfaction, positive word-of-mouth recommendations, and an increased likelihood of returning to the destination.
