MANILA – The Philippines will continue to experience widespread rainfall due to the combined effects of three weather systems: the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the shear line, and the northeast monsoon or amihan, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 5 a.m. bulletin on Sunday (08 Dec 2024), PAGASA warned that Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Palawan will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms brought by the ITCZ.

Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potential flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rainfall.

Shear line

Meanwhile, the shear line is expected to cause cloudy conditions with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms in Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, and Camarines Sur.

In northern Luzon, the amihan will bring cloudy skies and rain to Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and the rest of the Cagayan Valley.

Though rainfall will be moderate, PAGASA warns of the possibility of localized flooding or landslides in these mountainous areas.

The northeast monsoon will also influence Ilocos Region and the remaining parts of the Cordillera Administrative Region, though no significant impact is expected in these areas.

PAGASA also reported that extreme northern Luzon will face strong to gale-force winds coming from the northeast, leading to rough to very rough coastal waters with waves ranging between 3.4 to 5 meters. Mariners and fisherfolk in these areas are advised to take caution.

Residents across the affected regions are encouraged to stay updated through PAGASA’s advisories and to prepare for potential weather-related disruptions.
