MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded five deaths due to COVID-19 from May 7 to 13.

However, the agency reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm yet. “Hindi tayo dapat maalarma pero dapat tayo ay alerto. ‘Yan po ang pananaw ng DOH,” DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo said in a radio interview on Wednesday, May 22.

Domingo mentioned that 11 percent of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds for COVID-19 were occupied, while 13 percent of non-ICU beds were in use.

Despite an uptick in cases and new variants, the DOH official emphasized that the country remains at low risk. The average daily cases of COVID-19 are at 125, the agency reported.

The DOH also stated that there is no scientific basis for imposing travel restrictions to any country due to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

“The voluntary use of face masks should be done properly, along with standard precautions like hand washing, avoiding crowds, and ensuring good airflow,” it added.
