MANILA — Citing the latest survey conducted by Tangere showing that 52% of Filipinos believed the Constitution should now be amended, Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. on Sunday (24 March 2024) prodded the Senate to pass its Resolution of Both Houses 6, aimed at amending the economic provisions of the 37-year-old Charter.
The House of Representatives under the “proactive leadership” of Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez has approved its Resolution of Both Houses 7, which is similar to RBH 6, before it adjourned session for the Lenten Break on Wednesday (20 March 20).
“They should respond to our people’s support for Charter reform by approving RBH No. 6, their version of the amendment proposals ASAP, upon the resumption of our session on April 22 after our Holy Week recess,” Gonzales quipped.
He noted that Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri made a similar commitment but failed.
“Our good Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez delivered on his promise to approve the proposals before Holy Week. That’s leadership,” Gonzales noted.
Gonzales said Zubiri can still redeem himself by having the Senate approve RBH 6 upon the resumption of the session later next month.
It was learned that the Tangere survey results released on Friday (22 March 2024) showed that 14% of Filipinos “strongly agree” while 38% “somewhat agree” with the Charter change.
On the other hand, some 13% “somewhat disagree” and 10% “strongly disagree” with the proposal while 25% were undecided whether to support or oppose Charter reform.
