MANILA — In a compelling privilege speech before the House of Representatives today, Rep. Erwin Tulfo of ACT-CIS Partylist called for robust support for a crucial proposal involving the West Philippine Sea—a region at the center of escalating geopolitical tension.
Rep. Tulfo addressed the assembly, underscoring the significance of recent statements by high-ranking US military officials. Admiral Samuel Paparo Jr., Chief of the US Indo-Pacific Command, and Major General Pat Ryder, Pentagon Press Secretary, have both affirmed the United States’ willingness to escort Filipino vessels during resupply missions in the contested waters.
“The West Philippine Sea remains a critical area of concern due to the ongoing aggressive maneuvers and unlawful maritime activities by the People’s Republic of China (PRC),” Tulfo said.
He emphasized the importance of this offer as not merely a logistical convenience but a substantial reinforcement of the Philippines’ sovereign rights under international law.
Rep. Tulfo outlined several compelling reasons for supporting the US escort proposal:
Strengthening Alliances: He argued that this initiative would transform our alliances from symbolic gestures into tangible actions that fortify our sovereignty and uphold international norms.
International Solidarity: Supporting the US offer would send a clear message to the global community of the Philippines’ commitment to defending its maritime rights and maintaining regional stability. This united front with our allies demonstrates a coordinated stance against aggression.
Preventive Strategy: Accepting the escort offer would serve as a preventive measure, deterring further provocations by China and ensuring a coordinated response to any aggressive actions. This would not only safeguard our supply missions but also contribute to broader maritime security.
Rep. Tulfo urged his colleagues to back the resolution endorsing the US escort proposal, stressing the potential impact on national security and the Philippines’ position on the global stage.
“Our decision today is pivotal. We must collectively affirm that the Philippines will not be cowed or coerced. We stand resolute in defending our territorial integrity and rightful claims in the West Philippine Sea.”
In conclusion, Rep. Tulfo reaffirmed his call for support, asserting the Philippines’ commitment to resilience and sovereignty. “Mabuhay ang Pilipinas,” he declared, rallying his fellow legislators and the nation behind this critical issue.
The speech has set the stage for a decisive legislative move that could significantly influence the Philippines’ strategic posture in the region.
