MANILA – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced on Wednesday (August 7, 2024) that he plans to seek advice from double gold medalist Carlos Yulo on how the government can better support and increase the number of sports medalists in the country.

“That is, I think, a more significant effort, and that’s why I will ask Caloy Yulo what he believes the government can do to help us produce more medalists,” Marcos said.

“I believe he will continue to reach greater heights in sports since he has been a world champion for a long time. He should have won at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but he was a bit short. Now, we’ve seen his true capabilities. I think he will be the best person to consult on what additional measures we can take,” the Chief Executive added.

Yulo won two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, topping the men’s gymnastics floor exercise and vault.

When asked if the Office of the President would provide a separate reward for Yulo, Marcos confirmed this would be considered.

“Since he has already received monetary rewards from various sources, what we will do is ask him directly how else the government can help increase the number of our Olympic medalists,” the President said.
