MANILA – House Majority Leader Erwin Tulfo expressed alarm over the apparent desecration of the world-famous Chocolate Hills due to the construction of a resort.

On Monday, May 20, 2024, Tulfo highlighted that loopholes in the law allowed this circumvention.

This concern was raised during the House Committee on Natural Resources hearing, chaired by Negros Occidental 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Marañon.

The hearing addressed the “illegal” construction of Captain’s Peak in the Chocolate Hills, a national heritage site and UNESCO-declared geological park.

“The problem identified by this committee, headed by Chairman Marañon, is that there are loopholes and gray areas in the law. Chairman Marañon correctly pointed out that this should be the DENR’s responsibility,” Tulfo stated.

The journalist-turned-House leader emphasized that the law needs to be corrected to prevent the desecration of national heritage sites like the Chocolate Hills.
