MANILA – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is mourning the tragic loss of Airman First Class Mervin Guarte, a multi-medalist at the Southeast Asian Games and dedicated member of the Armed Forces, who was fatally stabbed early Tuesday (07 Jan 2025) morning in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo expressed the military’s deep sorrow over Guarte’s death and assured his family of the PAF’s “full support and assistance” during this difficult time. Castillo also confirmed that the PAF is fully cooperating with local law enforcement authorities in their investigation into the incident.
“The Philippine Air Force is deeply saddened by the untimely loss of Airman First Class Mervin Guarte. His dedication, discipline, and excellence, both as a soldier and an athlete, made him an inspiration to many. We are committed to providing support to his family and ensuring that justice is served,” Castillo said in a statement.
Guarte, 33, was killed in a violent altercation at around 4:30 a.m. on January 7, 2025, at the residence of a village councilor in Sitio Pinagkaisahan, Barangay Camilmil, Calapan City. Authorities reported that he sustained fatal stab wounds to the chest and was declared dead at the hospital shortly thereafter.
A member of the Philippine Air Force since 2015, Guarte had represented the country in numerous international competitions, bringing home medals and honor from the Southeast Asian Games. His exemplary service and athletic achievements earned him the respect and admiration of both his peers and the wider sports community.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano expressed his condolences and called for a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Guarte’s death. “Violence has no place in our society, and we must ensure that those responsible for this crime are held accountable,” Cayetano said in a statement. He emphasized the significant loss to Guarte’s family, the Philippine Air Force, and the national sports community.
“His legacy as a soldier-athlete who made a positive impact on both his country and his peers should be remembered and celebrated,” Cayetano added. “Rest in peace, Mervin. Your contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.”
The Calapan City Police are continuing their investigation, though no suspects have been publicly identified at this time.
Guarte’s untimely death has left a profound impact on both his comrades in the Philippine Air Force and the broader athletic community, where he was widely regarded as a dedicated and talented athlete who made significant contributions to the nation’s sports achievements.
