MANILA – Eric Jed Olivarez defeated veteran Johnny Arcilla, 6-3, 6-3, to claim the men’s singles title at the Governor’s Cup National Open Tennis Championship held at the Iloilo Sports Complex on Friday, January 24.
Olivarez, showcasing a variety of shots, capitalized on his momentum after breaking Arcilla’s serve at 3-3 in the first set.
The 26-year-old extended his lead, securing his first win on synthetic grass courts.
Arcilla, 44, a seasoned Davis Cupper and 10-time Philippine Columbian Association Open champion, struggled to keep pace after a strong start.
In earlier rounds, Olivarez breezed through victories against John Benedict Santiago (6-3, 6-0), Austin delos Santos (6-2, 6-1), Eric Jay Tangub (6-2, 7-5), and Vicente Anasta (6-0, 6-1). Arcilla, on the other hand, reached the final by defeating Claran Alipo-on (6-1, 6-1), Luke Flores (6-1, 6-1), John Kendrick Bona (6-2, 6-2), and Ronard Joven (6-2, 6-4).
As singles champion, Olivarez earned PHP100,000, while Arcilla took home PHP50,000. The event was part of the Kasadyaan and Dinagyang festivals.
In doubles, Arcilla and Joven claimed the top prize of PHP50,000 after a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Olivarez and Anasta.
