MANILA – The BRP Teresa Magbanua continues to patrol the waters off Zambales to counter the illegal presence of the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.
In a statement on Saturday (11 Jan 2025), PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Commodore Jay Tarriela, confirmed that a CCG vessel with bow number “3304” had been spotted illegally operating approximately 70 to 80 nautical miles off the coast of the province.
Commodore Tarriela emphasized that the Teresa Magbanua’s persistent deployment reflects President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to prevent the normalization of the CCG’s unlawful activities, which could potentially lead to attempts to assert control over Philippine waters.
“The unwavering presence of BRP Teresa Magbanua is a proactive step to ensure Filipino fishermen can continue their livelihoods without fear of harassment or intimidation,” said Tarriela.
He added, “The deployment of the PCG’s vessel highlights our commitment to maintaining a strong presence in the area, deterring illegal Chinese Coast Guard activities while adhering to principles of restraint and non-provocation.”
Earlier this week, the PCG reported sightings of the CCG vessel “3103” en route to Zambales, set to replace the notorious CCG-5901, which had been engaged in a five-day incursion into Philippine waters. The Teresa Magbanua’s vigilance continues as CCG vessel “3304” eventually took over from “3103,” according to Tarriela.
