MANILA – Pope Francis has officially designated the St. Gregory the Great Parish Church in Majayjay, Laguna, as a minor basilica.

This marks the first church in the Diocese of San Pablo to receive such an honor, as confirmed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News on Friday (31 Jan 2025).

The Vatican issued the decree on January 25, 2025, following a petition submitted by the diocese in December 2024.

San Pablo Bishop Marcelino Antonio Maralit Jr. expressed gratitude for the designation, calling it a “wonderful blessing,” particularly during the Jubilee Year of Hope. He emphasized that the church is not only a symbol of faith but also a reminder of the mission to spread the Good News and God’s love.

Minor basilicas are selected for their historical significance, architectural value, and role as centers of worship. These churches also share a special connection with Rome and the pope, as specified by the Dicastery for Divine Worship.

Founded in 1576, Majayjay Church has endured numerous challenges, including fire damage and natural disasters, and even served as quarters for American troops during the Filipino American War.

Its current structure, built between 1616 and 1649, is the largest parish church in Laguna. The church was also recognized as a “National Historical Treasure” by the National Museum of the Philippines for its cultural and architectural importance.
