MANILA — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called upon Filipinos on Saturday (27 April 2024) to embrace and preserve the legacy of Lapulapu, emphasizing his unwavering patriotism as a beacon for contemporary society to confront modern challenges.
Reflecting on the historic triumph of Lapulapu and his warriors against the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, Marcos underscored the profound courage and dedication to the country exhibited by this iconic Filipino figure.
He highlighted how Lapulapu’s valor, bravery, and steadfastness epitomized the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people, showcasing how a united community grounded in courage and integrity can overcome formidable adversaries.
Marcos stressed the relevance of Lapulapu’s example in confronting present-day oppressors, identifying greed, selfishness, and divisiveness as contemporary challenges to be confronted.
He urged citizens to draw inspiration from Lapulapu’s selfless defense of family, comrades, and community against external threats, emphasizing that his legacy serves as a reminder of the inherent bravery and honor within each Filipino.
Challenging the youth in particular, Marcos called for a continued embrace of Lapulapu’s ideals and a deeper appreciation of Philippine heritage as the nation transitions towards a “Bagong Pilipinas” (New Philippines). He emphasized the importance of building upon the foundations of liberty and freedom secured through the sacrifices of heroes like Lapulapu.
Republic Act 11040 recognizes April 27 as a “special working public holiday” nationwide in honor of Lapulapu, with Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province observing it as a “special non-working holiday,” reaffirming the enduring significance of Lapulapu’s legacy in the Filipino consciousness.
