MANILA — Senator Francis Tolentino emphasized the importance of establishing provincial evacuation centers to assist displaced families during calamities.

Tolentino stated that “the presence of provincial evacuation centers gives local governments and rescuers more options for safely relocating evacuees.”

This call comes amid the massive flooding and landslides affecting several localities in Bicol due to Typhoon Kristine.

Bicol is one of the country’s most disaster-prone regions due to its geophysical location, which frequently experiences typhoons, as well as the presence of active volcanoes.

Several areas in Bicol are currently facing the worst flooding in years after Kristine unleashed heavy rainfall over the region since Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Tolentino urged the public to coordinate with the government to facilitate relief efforts.

“Many groups are ready to extend assistance, and I encourage organizations and individuals who want to help to coordinate with our government agencies to facilitate relief efforts for our affected kababayans in Bicol,” the senator said.
