BATANGAS CITY – The Batangas Coast Guard successfully recovered the bodies of two Russian nationals who tragically passed away during a diving session near Verde Island on Thursday (27 Feb 2025), authorities confirmed.

According to reports, one of the victims was immediately rushed to St. Patrick Hospital in Batangas City but was declared dead on arrival. The second body was recovered later that day, showing signs of a severe injury, particularly missing its right hand. Authorities suspect the injury may have been caused by a shark attack.

The identities of the victims are still being confirmed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of death and further details surrounding the incident.

“We are currently working with Russian authorities and other agencies to gather more information,” said a Coast Guard official in a statement. “Our team is providing assistance and will continue to ensure that the incident is thoroughly investigated.”

The Coast Guard’s efforts were hailed for their swift response, as the area near Verde Island is known for its vibrant marine life but can be hazardous to divers if proper precautions aren’t followed.

This incident has raised concerns about safety measures for diving enthusiasts in the region, with authorities emphasizing the importance of being mindful of marine wildlife and the necessity of professional guidance during such activities.
