MANILA – Over 41,000 candidates vying for local government positions in the May 12 elections will officially begin their campaign period on Friday, March 28.

According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), there are 41,342 contenders for positions including district representatives, governors, vice governors, provincial board members, mayors, vice mayors, and councilors.

The 45-day campaign period will run until May 10. Comelec Chairperson George Garcia has reminded candidates to strictly adhere to campaign regulations to avoid legal repercussions. “Always comply with Comelec directives,” Garcia urged. “Do not disregard the rules.”

Campaign materials must meet specific guidelines, such as pamphlets, leaflets, and posters that cannot exceed 8 1/2″ by 14″ in size, and posters or standees must be no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet. Campaign materials can be displayed at public meetings or rallies and on mobile units or vehicles.

However, candidates are prohibited from displaying materials on government-owned properties such as LED boards, government vehicles, public transport, and public infrastructure like sidewalks and waiting sheds.

Further restrictions include a limit of 60 minutes of TV ads and 90 minutes of radio ads per station. Printed ads must not exceed one-fourth of a broadsheet page or one-half of a tabloid page, and can only be published up to three times a week.

Local Comelec offices have been instructed to create more designated areas for campaign posters. Garcia also reminded candidates to secure the necessary permits for rallies, ensuring they don’t disrupt local traffic.

Violators of these guidelines will face official notices, and persistent offenders may be subject to legal action, Garcia warned.
