Jamesray Mishael Ajido shows fine form en route to clinching the bronze for the country in the 11th Asian Age Group Championships at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac
CAPAS, TARLAC – The Philippines celebrated its first medals at the 11th Asian Age Group Championships as Heather White and Jamesray Mishael Ajido clinched third place in their respective events on Tuesday night (27 Feb 2024) at the New Clark City Aquatics Center.
Sixteen-year-old Heather White, a Filipino-British athlete residing in Vietnam, achieved a personal best time of 1:03.09 in the girls’ 15-17 100m butterfly event. Despite fierce competition, she expressed her joy at the unexpected victory, especially after her recent participation in the 50m freestyle.
Hong Kong’s Hoi Ching Yeung claimed the gold medal in 1:00.50, breaking Aki Obata’s 2009 record, while her teammate Sze Ki Mok secured silver.
Jamesray Mishael Ajido, hailing from Antipolo City, made his mark by securing the bronze medal in the boys’ 12-14 50m freestyle with a personal best and national record time of 24.34. Ajido, a Grade 8 student at La Salle Greenhills, dedicated his victory to his faith and family, showcasing his commitment to representing the Philippines with pride.
Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann lauded the achievements of White and Ajido during his visit on Wednesday, emphasizing the significance of their accomplishments in the tournament.
As of Tuesday, Japan leads the medal tally board with 20 golds, 11 silvers, and 4 bronzes, reflecting the intense competition at the championships.
