MANILA – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported increased unrest at Mt. Kanlaon over the past 24 hours.
In a Bagong Pilipinas interview on Friday, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol announced that the volcano recorded 45 volcanic earthquakes.
He indicated that a phreatic eruption is possible and reminded the public that Alert Level 2 remains in effect, prohibiting entry into the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.
“Early this week, the number of recorded earthquakes decreased significantly, from a high of 337 on September 11 to just five over the past two days. However, in the past 24 hours, it has surged again to 45,” Bacolcol said, noting the sulfur dioxide flux.
On September 19, Phivolcs reported 8,932 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux and a moderate plume emission reaching 150 meters in height, drifting northeast and east.
An inflated volcanic edifice was also observed.
Residents near the volcano are advised to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash and gases.
In the event of a sulfur odor, Bacolcol recommended drinking plenty of water to help neutralize the sulfur and rinsing the eyes with water if irritation occurs. Those experiencing more severe symptoms should consult a doctor.
