MANILA — Alex Cabagnot has officially announced his retirement from playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) following a brief time with the Converge FiberXers.
Converge FiberXers expressed their gratitude to Cabagnot for his contributions to the team after he made his return to the PBA last August 2024.
“Thank you, Cabaggie. You may be hanging up your jersey, but your legacy remains both with the Converge FiberXers and in the PBA. Thank you, Alex Cabagnot,” the team said in a statement on their social media account.
Cabagnot’s decision to retire comes after he accepted a position as the head coach of the University of the East (UE), where he will join Chris Gavina’s coaching staff.
Before returning to the PBA, Cabagnot had stints overseas, playing for Goyang Sono Skygunners in Korea during the 2023-2024 season and the Taiwan Mustangs in 2024.
During his two conferences with Converge, Cabagnot averaged 4.21 points, 2.07 rebounds, and 2.36 assists in 14 games in the Governors’ Cup. In the Commissioner’s Cup, he played only three games, scoring just one point during the eliminations.
Cabagnot had a decorated career, winning nine championships with the San Miguel Beermen and being part of the famed “Death Five” alongside June Mar Fajardo, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Ross, and Arwind Santos.
He was named Finals MVP in the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup and was honored as Comeback Player of the Year in 2015 by the PBA Press Corps. His retirement marks the end of an illustrious career that left a lasting impact on the PBA and its fans.
