MANILA — Batangas City has been selected as the host city for the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers 2025, set to take place from May 24 to 30.
The South East Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) officially announced its calendar of events, which includes the Philippines’ hosting of this crucial youth basketball tournament.
The competition will serve as the regional qualifier for the FIBA U16 Asia Cup, scheduled from August 31 to September 7 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The top two teams from the SEABA tournament will earn their spots to represent Southeast Asia.
While SEABA has yet to disclose the exact venue in Batangas, this marks the first time the Philippines is hosting a Southeast Asian basketball tournament since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.
LA Tenorio Set for Coaching Debut
This tournament will also mark the SEABA coaching debut of LA Tenorio, who was appointed Gilas Youth head coach in November 2024.
Notably, Tenorio hails from Batangas, adding a personal touch to the event. The team has been conducting tryouts since February in preparation for the competition.
Meanwhile, other notable basketball events in the region include:
FIBA U16 Women’s Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers 2025 – May 14-18, Hanoi, Vietnam
SEABA U17 3×3 Cup – Scheduled for September or October (venue TBA)
33rd Southeast Asian Games (5-on-5 & 3×3 basketball) – December 9-20, Bangkok, Thailand
With basketball continuing to thrive in the Philippines, hosting the SEABA Qualifiers is a significant step in nurturing young talent and reinforcing the country’s dominance in the sport.
