MANILA – Carlos Yulo has secured his place in the finals of the Paris Olympics men’s artistic gymnastics all-around event.

Early Sunday (Philippine Time), Yulo finished eighth in the preliminary round with a score of 83.631 points, ensuring his spot in the Top 24 cut-off for the medal round.

Yulo also qualified for the finals in his specialty, the floor exercise, finishing second with 14.766 points, just 0.2 points behind Great Britain’s Jake Jarman.

In the vault, Yulo placed sixth with 14.683 points, giving him another chance at a medal.

However, he struggled in the parallel bars, finishing 19th with 14.533 points, missing the top eight required for the finals.

Yulo will face stiff competition from Asian gymnasts in the all-around finals. China’s Zhang Boheng leads with 88.597 points, followed by Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka and Daiki Hashimoto with 86.865 and 85.064 points, respectively. Another Chinese gymnast, Xiao Ruoteng, is fourth with 84.898 points.

As Yulo aims to secure the Philippines’ second-ever Olympic gold, his performance in the upcoming finals will be crucial.
