MANILA – The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro has denied reports that it will hold a “special Mass” for former president Rodrigo Duterte at the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro City.
In a statement on Wednesday (19 Mar 2025), Archbishop Jose Cabantan clarified that the Mass scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday is not intended for any specific individual and is open to everyone.
“A recent report from a media outlet claimed that the Cathedral is holding a special daily Mass for former president Rodrigo Duterte’s health and his return to the Philippines. We wish to categorically clarify that this is incorrect,” Cabantan said.
“The 5:30 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral, like all Eucharistic celebrations, is open to all and for all. The Holy Mass is a sacred act of worship where the faithful gather to lift up their personal and communal intentions to God. It is never exclusive to any one person, group, or political cause.”
He also addressed concerns about the pro-Duterte banners displayed outside the Cathedral. These were put up by the former president’s supporters, who are praying for his intentions. Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands, was arrested by the International Criminal Court (ICC) last week.
“We have also taken note of the placards with pro-Duterte messages displayed outside the Cathedral. These were placed by certain individuals or groups attending the Mass to pray for their intentions. While the Church welcomes all to bring their prayers before God, it remains committed to its mission of universality and neutrality, ensuring that places of worship remain spaces of faith, reflection, and unity,” Cabantan said.
Cabantan reminded the faithful to pray for “peace, unity, and justice.”
“The Church remains a mother to all, embracing everyone with pastoral care, without taking sides in political conflicts. As followers of Christ, we must rise above divisions and be instruments of reconciliation and truth,” he added.
He also urged the faithful not to support those spreading misinformation.
“We urge everyone to seek truth from official Church sources and reject misinformation that sows discord. This Lent, let us renew our hearts, set aside hostility, and commit to prayer and works of mercy for our nation’s good,” Cabantan concluded.
