MANILA — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has reminded local government units (LGUs) of their responsibility to implement solid waste management plans to protect public health and the environment.

The DENR highlighted the Solid Waste Management Act, which requires LGUs to develop, implement, and enforce their respective waste management plans, subject to approval by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC).

“The DENR would like to reemphasize the importance of effective waste management in safeguarding public health and protecting our environment,” the agency said in a statement.

“The Department stands ready to provide technical assistance to LGUs to help them fulfill their duties,” it added.

According to the DENR, the NSWMC will take appropriate action to ensure the law is enforced.
