MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has emphasized its commitment to addressing any potential espionage activities by foreign nationals in the Philippines. In a statement issued on Thursday (23 Jan 2025), DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza confirmed that the department is closely monitoring the ongoing investigation into an alleged espionage case involving a Chinese national and his Filipino accomplices.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs takes seriously any indications of espionage operations by foreign nationals, in line with its mandate to safeguard national security,” Daza said.

The DFA also expressed its full support for the Department of Justice, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other relevant agencies as they carry out their respective duties in accordance with the law.

The case involves a Chinese national and two Filipino individuals who were arrested on January 17 for conducting surveillance operations at key civilian and military sites. Authorities discovered that the suspects were using a sports utility vehicle loaded with espionage equipment. They were apprehended by NBI operatives at a condominium in Makati City on January 20, 2025.

The Department of Foreign Affairs assured the public that it will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to support the investigation.
