MANILA – Authorities have arrested a man who posed as a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agent after he extorted ₱10 million from a Chinese businessman by falsely promising to secure the release of 20 detained Chinese nationals.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin said on Tuesday (25 Feb 2025) that Pasay City police apprehended the suspect, identified as “Crisanto,” on February 23 in Tondo, Manila.

He was caught driving a newly purchased sports utility vehicle, allegedly bought using the extorted money.

According to a Southern Police District report, the 38-year-old victim, identified as Chen, handed over ₱10 million to Crisanto at a seafood restaurant in Pasay City on February 20.

The suspect had introduced himself as an NBI intelligence officer and claimed he could facilitate the release of 20 Chinese nationals arrested during an operation at a KTV bar in Parañaque City.

However, after receiving the money, he failed to deliver on his promise.

Chen reportedly met Crisanto through two Bureau of Immigration employees, who later assisted authorities in tracking him down.

During the arrest, police recovered ₱1 million in cash, believed to be part of the bribe money. The suspect is currently detained at the Pasay City Police Station and faces charges of estafa and usurpation of authority under Article 177 of the Revised Penal Code.

Brig. Gen. Aberin urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the identities of individuals claiming to be government agents.

“If something seems suspicious, report it immediately. Awareness and timely action are key in preventing fraud and ensuring public safety,” Aberin emphasized.
